I have a 89 F350, 4 wheel drive, crew cab with the 7.3 amd its third E4OD transmission. First one went out at 70K, rebuilt by Ford dealer, lasted until 135K, rebuilt again, presently has 161K. From what I could find out before the second rebuild was that weak components weren't identified umtil mid 90's and include 4 gear overdrive and bearings in the middle to support the shafts. Hope they were right. Cost of rebuilds in No. VA. was around $2100 each time. Do an internet search on E4OD for more info.

We have and old saying around here ( It's takes IRON to haul IRON) , If you are going to be hauling heavy loads then go with a standard not a slush box clutches are not as costly to replace and do not tow in overdrive. When specing out a truck to do a job spec. it heave enough as it should be not to what some dumb sales person thinks . I have always speced out my trucks after going over the bookes and spec. my self and have had no problems. And ounce of commen sence goes a long way.
