Okay, I will NEVER drive this in California but plan to toss my Catalytic Converter and run 2 1/2 inch duals each with a huge free flow truck muffler so my 1992 Ford 460 FI RV will breathe easier. The air pump has two output hoses that pump air into the converter and my question is at the air pumps output can I just loop those two outputs together so she recirculates or leave them open to atmosphere or plug one or the other or what????? ?? I wanna do what it takes to keep an engine lite from coming on and/or messign up the computer so she runs the same.

PS Id also like to install a K & N or Banks High performance Air Intake System so she breathes free n easy comng in n going out both wooooo hooooo o Ive done so before and picked up an extra 1/2 MPG

I will deny any knowledge of this lol

Thanks Yall, After these comments and others on the RV Forums Ive decided to leave the Cat system, but replace it with one having dual 2 1/2 outlets versus the single 2 inch on the existing Cat and run 2 1/2 duals each with a huge honkin free flow mufflers. On the intake, its not so much I wanted a KN but wanted to replace the small plastic filter where BOTH inlet hoses enter with 2 big honkin air filters, one for EACH air inlet pipe. I think one can purchase 2 individual cone/bell shaped filters n attach to each pipe. Ive read n heard the same about KN, they flow easier cuz they are wayyyyy yy less restrictive i.e. let more air n bugs n flies n skeeters n dirt pass through lol

Yall take care

Do a search on K&N and you'll probably find reports that it lets more particulate into the engine. I did some blind mileage tests on my Dakota where I didn't tell my wife which airfilter was in the truck and the fuel mileage was exactly the same.
That surprised me because I'd seen mileage go up when I first started using it. My theory is mileage went up because I was driving it gentler, maybe even without realizing it. Samething with taking the tailgate off, no difference in mileage or a difference so small I couldn't find it.

I quit with the K&N although I'll admit that my truck has 200,000 miles so the 70 or 80,000 it had the K&N didn't seem to hurt anything.

On the removing the Cat front, I wouldn't do it, mostly because its an FI engine. The engine was designed for a specific level of backpressure and the heads should have been designed to use that backpressure to help scavenge the cylinders and save fuel while producing extra power.
More flow might help power but it might also hurt fuel economy (since you'll be pushing unburnt gas through the system) and may bring the check engine light on or worse put you into "limp home" mode.

One other item you may want to think about is camshaft timing Ford has at least two p/n's for the timing gear on crankshaft.Early 429/460 has better timing for gas mileage and power. In about 1973 they retarded camshafts to meet emissions. If you plan on putting on timing chain get the good one.

Back when i was running a 460 ya could not run duals as the oxygen sencor would not work wright . Did a bunch of playen with computers on that one and with the Last one we put in it was the best one for power and fuel milage pullen a 28 foot goose neck equipment trailer haulen farm equipment and tractors . Never ran it any harder then 6500 Rpm And never hauled more then i could get on and never drove it faster then it would go. 287000 miles on her when i sold it to a farmer and as of last year he was still driven it . I don't know why you would want to do all that, let me explain. My 1989 Ford f350 w/460 FI Power was slowly losing the battle as a Tow Vehicle for my 11k LB. Jayco 5th Wheel RV Trailer and also It would not pass the Emmissions Test at all,so I decided that I had to get it right or Junk it. With 216K Miles the Catylitic Converter was the first item to get my attention. I got one at Checkers for $379.00 and some new pipe and Clamps and installed it. Next I replaced the Spark Plugs, Dist Rotor and Dist Cap.A new Air Cleaner Filter, fresh 20w50 Quaker State Oil and a new Oil filter and a full Tank of 91 Octane Gas and it sailed thru Emmissions Test so good that it was retested upon an order from the Arizona Air Quality Commission which came up on the Test Facility Computor while I was waiting for my Paper Work to get out of there. It retested the same. 0 Hydrocarbons at Speed/ 0 Hydrocarbons at Idle. In other words all the Fuel was being burned with out any Emissions of Hydrocarbons being emmitted from the exhaust. On the Road with the RV it pulls hills in 5th Gear and 60MPH where in the past it would only in 4th gear at 45 MPH pull the same Hills. Down side is I think it uses more Fuel. Why I have not a Clue. Sure is nice to keep up with the Power Strokes and Duramax's now. Haven't caught up with a Dodge/Cummins yet. This is with a 18 year old Truck with over 200K Miles on it,the Heads,Fuel Injection system,Oil Pan have never been removed from this Engine.

John,

My guess is that you keep your foot into it a little more now because you can. The new cat and tuneup should actually make it use a little less fuel.

You could be right. It is very refreshing to have your confidence restored in a Vehicle which you have spent so much time of your life fooling with.
