No such engine? Wrong size tire?

I have a chance to get a Chicago Pneumatic towable 125cfm air compressor. Continental gas 4 cyl. engine is totaly disassembled, compressor was scraped. Tires are flat and cracked after 20+ years of non use. So I'll take it.

The tag on the block is G198x38. Another tag on body is G 0198AH. I have an IR compressor with a Continental G193 engine that needs parts. (The head and manifold on the two engines are completely different.) The parts book has no G198 listing. Any ideas what the G198x38 is and why it's not in the book?

The rims are identical. One tire is 7.00x16, tube type. The other tire is 225 75B 15, tubless. Both tire look normal on the rim. How did someone get a 15" tire on a 16" rim?

Slow,

That is a hercules 198 , probably listed

as a G 2000 --3 3/4 X 4 1/2 .

If you don't use it , I need to talk to you.

You are right on the money with the bore and stroke....3 x 4. I'll look in the parts book for a G2000.

On my G193 someone left the exhaust uncovered and water filled a couple of the cylinders. When they tried to start it, several push rods bent. Some of the valves stems were rusted so bad the heads actually fell off, and the head is badly pitted. I haven't found any shop that can resurface the head because they say it won't fit on their machine.

I was planning on using the parts of this new find to repair the G193, but it's 120 miles away and I don't have the parts to compare. The parts book has no listing for push rods.

This machine is extremely heavy; I had all I could do to lift it with a scissor jack to see if the wheels were frozen. Since it's too far gone to restore I'm going to convert the compressor chassis to a small trailer to use around the "farm", "ranch", "ranchette" or whatever 5 acres are called.

What parts are you looking for?

Slowpoke:

Where are you located, and what parts do you need?

I have some G193 parts.

If you send me an e-mail, put G193 in the subject, so your e-mail doesn't get tossed.

Hi I have a friend in Palmerston North (NZ) who is rebuilding a G193 Continental engine. He has asked me to try and locate a Service Manual for him as I have worked in the Forklift Industry for 20 years and these engines were common to American market Hysters.
Trouble is I have not been able to source any information / or manuals at all.
Could you or someone else you know help me with this. Thanking you Sincerely Dean Dawson, Tauranga, New Zealand

Slow ,

I have a G 2000 apart , It has a split cylinder,
but that doesn't bother me . The real problem
is the governor ,the weight assemble has broken
and is not all there, it's a hoof governor and they have been bought out by pierce who no longer
services that model and has nothing that will
match. I need a complete governor.

After reading your post two or three times, I found the word HERCULES! No wonder the head and manifold are different than my Continental G193. I just saw the G198 part. Nice of them to use the same sort of ID.

The engine was removed from the chassis, almost completley disassembled and tossed back onto the frame. I didn't notice any pistons or governor as I was mostly interested in the valve train. The governor could be under the other parts. I'm not sure when I'll get back to the machine since it's 30 miles south and on the way to my toys another 90 miles further. At $3.50/gal of gas and $75-$80 per trip, I have to cut back. I'll get back to you when I can.

Slowpoke,

If there is a governor there ,I can help you with the cost of gas and make it worth your while . There is a picture of a hercules 4 cyl that I think is a G 2000 on the stationary engine board ,with a question about a worthington compressorand below it I posted a picture of the G 2000 that I have apart.

George, I saw the picture you posted on the stationary board. Can't say I recognize it as my block is upside down with the bearing caps still attached. My main concern was the valve train and how to get the machine to my place with two different rotting tires, probably frozen to the rims, and a missing coupler clamp. I'll try to get down there this week end if the fellow is home since it's still on his property.
S.
