I need to dig a trench across my satellite wires. how can I find them with out damaging them? will a metal detector find them? they are 12 to 24 inches under ground.

I have a couple questions, first, what type of trench are you putting in,how deep, and with what kind of equipment? Second, do you have a rough idea of where it is?, within a few feet, or?

putting in a 12" pipe from outside boiler to house to run pipes and wires through. don't know where wires are. this is a ribon cable for the sat. dish, 2 coax, actuator wires, polorator wires, plus coax for off air antena.

thanks everyone for your ideas. the locatotrs do not locate such things as wireing for yard lights, swimming pools, satellite dishes, etc. can't find a private co. to do it. I think I'll try washing it out with water, can't take a chance on nicking the coax because there is no long lasting splice for underground coax.

Not sure if this will work, but worth a try.
If you cut the cable, use a regular coax splice and then put the splice into one of those two-part epoxy underground splice kits for power wireing.

W.W. 12" is pushing it, but if there is nothing else metal around, it might. Put it in all metal mode and give it a try. Headphones will make a difference too.

As crazy as it sounds, try dousing. Get two coat hangers, about 18" long, bend about 4" ninety degree. Hold them lightly about 12" apart, pointing slightly downward. Start walking and when they cross each other, you found the wire. I didnt believe it, but it worked for me. Doesnt just work with water, found my underground service that way.

Call your local utility company or look in the phone book for a "utility locate service". They are free and will come out in a day or two and find and mark all your underground utilities.

I live in NE WI, and on private land that you own, the phone only does their wires and electric co. only does their's. My own underground stuff I have to hire someone to do it,..

My brother was digging a driveway entrance for his new house in NE WI and hand them come out and mark all the lines.

He found another one right at the roadside that they hadn't marked.

He was really happy that it was a fiber optic line instead of something else.

here in North Dakota, they will make all unground 'things' for free. Doesn't matter if it is rural water line, electric service or private hydrant lines or electric for out buildings. they do them all. Not always a 100% accurate, but gives you a good idea anyway.
my .02 worth.

If they're only 12" deep or so, why not (carefully) expose them with a spade after dousing. The trencher is okay if he can see the exposed wires.
