Stump grinders

Soon I will need a couple of oak stumps ground in the yard. Working on clearing the trees and brush yesterday and a fellow, cold calling, stopped with a small stump grinder transported on a small trailer behind an Isuzu pickup. This grinder was sized about the same as the small one-man ditch witch units the rental places offer. I have seen the larger units that remain hooked to the towing vehicle while in use. This fellow quoted a shocking price, but I have not used a stump grinder service ever before. I wonder if getting someone with a larger unit would actually be the better bargain. For example, if one machine costs $70 per hour and a larger one costs $140 per hour, but works 3 times as fast, the larger machine should do the job at lower cost. But would the larger machine make a bigger mess by throwing debris farther? Tell me what you know about prices and other considerations for stump grinding. I definitely will get additional quotes.

The fellow with the little machine yesterday quoted $275 for the two stumps. One of them was big with surface roots extending several feet. For that kind of money, I could shop around. So this morning I called another nearby fellow, but a stranger to me, for a quote. I did not tell him that I had any other quotes. He shows up with a nearly new BIG Vermeer machine behind a 4wd pickup. Says he will do it for $150. So he got the job right then and there. Took him about an hour. Paid him before he left. His helper told me that they had no jobs lined up for today. So I just happened to catch the right man with the right machine at the right time. If they had been busy, the price likely would have been higher. I do appreciate your responses.

Gooday Bussy , Ludi , 2 (3x4) and others . Glad you got the stumps done . Next time anyone wants stumps gone . Try Whey as in Curds & Whey . Drill 3" dia X 1' hole in stump and pour in Whey , cover with plastic & BINGO stumps eaten out in no time at all . Removed 20 , beside my driveway with 1 gal. for $ 10/gal from the local milk factory . Works well ( which I'm still trying to avoid ) costs little ( that's me - 1 cyl brain ) very effective & no mess . Catch-ya'all , Ciao-for-now , james oh & user friendly & on pocket to

That assumes the bigger unit is 3x as productive.
How much was the shocking quote? How many stumps are we talking about?

I'm a big fan of just boring holes down into stumps and letting nature take its course.

Of course the absolute fastest way to get a stump gone is to have the wife decide she loves it, wants flowers planted in it and will be heartbroken if the stump rots away!

When I lived in FL I believe it was about $150 to show up and that included 36" of total stump(up to a max of 3 trees) and $25 a foot beyond that.
