Bought a couple of sticks of 3/4 inch square tubing this morning. I need to build brackets on a power wheel chair. They measure 5 to 10 thousands over the three quarter inch. Won't go into the mounting holes on the chair, which is about 5 inches of 1 inch by 1/8 inch square. Can't we trust any thing any more? China made? What can I do, hand grind the whole length? Don't have a 24 inch surface grinder.

What are you building Kenny? If you need some slip fit pieces, let me know, I'll mill you a couple pieces that will fit into your slots.

Thanks Chad, but think I got it wipped with sander and grinder. I am building a cup holder on my power wheel chair. All so need a place for my water jug. Its where they plug in the foot rests, etc. Next farm sale--here I come.

I'm not understanding the full project. But off the shelf square tube will have a seam on the inside. Now look at square PTO drive line tube and square stock. They are made to slide into each other without a buch of space leftover. bjr

Carefull purchasing some of that cheap tubing. Sometimes the I.D. is larger than the O.D. That leaves the hole on the outside.

I've been fabricating machinery using square/rectangular tubing for the last 20 years and I very seldom see any that is perfectly square or precision dimensions. Some of it has had "Made in Canada" stamped on it. Never noticed it being any better or any worse than other stuff.

It"s gonna vary by size, shape, etc, etc, etc, but 99.99999% of steel manufactured, China made or not, is gonna have a tollerance of so many thousandths. Just like going out and buying a 2x4 that"s only 1.5 x 3.5, the sizes are nominal at best, especially with formed and welded tubes. If you want a little more "on size" then you could try a seemless/ drawn tube but your gonna pay more and there"s still gonna be a tollerance, though usually not as great as the formed stuff. That"s why you never buy steel "on size" to machine it becase a piece that"s sized, for instance, at 1.5 may actually be 1. 495, 1.505, or whatever. If all you have to take off is, at most, .005 per side then you ought to be able to do that with a course (say 36 or 24 grit) sanding disc on a 4.5 inch grinder. A couple of good hard passes ought to be all you need to remove that amount of material, otherwise your only choic would be to have someone machine it for you. Good luck...
