ITS PULLING OIL OUT OF COMPRESSOR PUMP AND DRAWING IT THROUGH THE CARB. CAUSING IT TO SMOKE BAD ITS WORSE WHEN YOU IDLE IT DOWN ANY IDEAS WHAT MIGHT BE CAUSING IT? THANKS DOUG

Check to see if this compressor uses what's called an "oil stop" valve. This is simply a check valve that prevents the backflow of pressurized air and oil from the separator tank, back into the screwset at low rpm and shutdown. It may be a simple swing check valve, or a spring loaded steel plate and seat type valve. Does your pressure drop quickly if you idle the compressor down without a load?

Alternately, your intake valve may not be closing properly. Check for a pinched air signal line, or a line that has been disconnected in any way. Take off the inlet filter and observe the action of the inlet valve when the unit is idled down.

Screw compressors use either a normally open, or normally closed inlet valve. If normally closed, the valve itself sometimes performs the operation of the oil check valve, so if it does not fully close, or the seat is worn, you will get oil flow back into the intake. Check that any cup seals in the intake valve shaft has not failed. Is this a poppet type inlet valve, or a ball type inlet valve? I have seen simple ball valves used as inlets on a Sullair, it might have worn out seals in it.

Is the compressor overfilled?

Does your separator tank blow down valve work when you shut off the compressor?

I'm gonna assume it's a rotary screw compressor you've got since it's a Sullair. In that case it sounds like the intake/load control valve is bad. I've seen two lately, a Compair and an IR, that both had week springs on the inlet/load control valve. Both ran just fine but when shut down they "burped" compressor oil back into the intake. The Compair was set up like I assume your talking about with the engine and compressor intake both coming off a common cleaner housing before splitting. In my case the compressor was "burping" so bad it filled the intake piping with oil that the turbo, still spinning after shutdown, then forced into the engine putting it into a hydraulic lock. I pulled the injectors to "unlock it" twice before I realized what was happening. Now why your's would be doing it while actually running is a mystery. Could it possibly be putting the oil into the intake piping during shutdown but it's just not noticable til the engine is running and sucking it in? Possibly the seals in the intake/load control are bad to the point that even though the control system is putting pressure to the valve to cause it to shut tight it isn't. This would cause the compressor to continue sucking in air and building pressure instead of simply circulating the air/oil mix already there. On that note make sure the running blowdown valve is operating properly so the compressor oil/air mix can circulate when the intake is shut, if in fact it is shutting. If the intake/control valve isn't shutting tight for whatever reason and even if some of the air/oil mix is circulating, the excess has to have somewhere to go. Since the air outlet valve is shut the only other break in the system, other than the system relief is the intake. If the leak through the intake isn't great enough to cause the compressor to build enough excess to pop the relief the the intake is the only break in the system for the excess air to escape through. With the engine creating a vacuum on the intake side it becomes a path of least resistance for the compressed air and with it coming back through the compressor it's gonna be carrying oil whereas the air going though the air valve has dropped it's air in the air/oil seperator. Unfortunately this is the best answer I can give you with the info provided and simply making a few assumptions about what you've got... I hope it helps.
