BLT, if you want a good deal on a 3/4 set. and can wait a bit... There are often Wright sets on Ebay, that sell rather cheaply... IMHO, Wright is just as good as Proto, Snap-on or SK.. Several years ago, I bought a Wright 1 inch drive set, that lists for 3,700 dollars on ebay.. Only one socket had ever been used. I paid about 200, plus 75 for shipping...

Historically, Jet has usually been Taiwanese, but I think a lot of their stuff is now China-made. Got a 3/4" socket set from the Cummins traveling tool show several years back and have been well satisfied. Same thing as is sold by Northern Tool, Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Homeier, etc. etc. Probably the same as the Jet set as well. No, it isn't Snap-on, but I've also still got several hundred dollars in my pocket. I have yet to break a socket despite some pretty stout use. The ratchet isn't the greatest, but if you follow the usual strategy of breaking things loose with the breaker bar (that's what it's there for) and only using the ratchet for spinning things on and off, it should hold up well for occasional use. Down side of the cheaper sets is that the cheaper steel used means that the wall thicknesses are greater than a better set--I've had to borrow a socket a couple of times when there wasn't enough clearance for the cheap socket--for example rear end pinion nuts. A friend has the Craftsman set, and it was fairly reasonable and seems to be decently made, plus has a warranty, which can be an issue with the import sets unless you have a store nearby.

I bought a 3/4 drive socket set that was made overseas because I did not want to spent a lot of money. Those sockets open up like beer bans. So for the money I spent I still don't have anything. I am in the process of buying an SK set from www.tooldesk.com. SK is made in Chicago.

Most likely from China... I see a lot of imported socket sets from there, however, some are priced so cheaply, I could not blame anyone for buying them.. I have seen some 3/4 sets, new, at the flea market for about 30 bucks, including ratchet and extensions.. That is less than 1/10th of the price of a Wright or Proto set.. For occasional use, the import sets should be OK..
