Last nights post by Dug:

"The old 2510 called it quits last night on the way home from the welding shop. Just had my forks installed and driving her home when she up and died. She turns over just fine, but doesn't spark. Where shall I start? Coil? Wires and plugs? Points? Or just replace it all...with a new Case?"

What I found out today...:

Stopped by the parts store on the way home and picked up points, condenser, plugs and wires. Checked the points and was getting good spark, so I tried to start her up. She fired up! idled kinda poor, would bog down every 10 seconds, then return to idle. Finally warmed up and I drove her around a little bit and everything seemed fine, a little sluggish, but ran ok. I checked the filter and it was fine. I need to take her to another property about 1 1/2 miles away, but am a little skittish on taking her back on the road until I know she is back to normal. Any suggestions? Water in the fuel? Go ahead and replace points and condenser? Plugs and wires? Buy a new Case???

Have you checked to see if the switch is bad?

after reading your post a couple times, i got to thinkin...i know...i really shouldnt, hurts my brain. butttt....you said they just got done welding on the tractor, and that made a light bulb go off in the noggin. here at the body shop, whenever we weld on any vehicles, we disconnect the battery, and isolate the cable ends from the vehicle. avoids the juice from the welder from damaging any electrical components. could be the welder affected the ignition system, burning out the condenser, coil, points or ignition switch. just a thought.

HI Dug, That Johnny'll keep hounding you for more and more attention- there's no getting around it. Time to start looking for a new Case.
That is what you wanted to hear, right? :-)

Roger

Is this being run on ethanol fuel? I"ve run into the same thing a few times since the ethanol was mandated in my state.

Sounds like either a bad coil or condenser. When either one of these is failing the tractor might run when it's cold, not well sometimes, but it will run. After the tractor runs for awhile the failing coil or condenser will warm up and short out internally, killing the spark. Try replacing the condenser first, I'll betcha that's the culprit, and while you're in there, replace the points too. Good luck. Jim

Might be the coil going bad on your but more then likely you have some sort of clog in the fuel system

I've seen where rust on the screen in the gas tank on the pick up blocked the fuel flow enough to make it starve when it was useing lots of fuel say driving down the road from the welding shop but still run alright around the farm doing light chores. Sounds like some fuel but not enough for some situations.

I'll replace the points and condenser tomorrow and see if that cures the problem, but I'm leaning toward a fuel problem.

Thanks to all who posted. I appreciate your help.

If it didn't have spark when it quit then it's not a fuel problem that caused it. :-)
