IR 3/4 Impact Gun

I just purchased a used 3/4 inch impact gun on ebay. It"s an IR Model 252. I"m trying to find out the correct way to lubricate it. I found a operator"s manual on the IR web page, but it doesn"t tell much other than there"s a chamber in the handle that you"re supposed to fill with IR lubricant #50 (whatever that is), in addition to the normal couple drops of oil into the air inlet. Does anyone have one of these guns, and know what type of generic oil it needs? Thanks

To do it the right way, look on the outside of the gun for a little round place that looks like it has a ball bearing in the midle of it. It's usually located toward the bottom, on one side or the other or the main housing, right close to where the hammer housing bolts on, or it can also be right in the middle of the rear of the gun. It's basically a flat grease fitting...the round place is usually black with the little shiny chrome ball in the center. Not sure how much or what kind of lube you'd use, other than to say a good grease, but you put it in with one of those small pistol grip guns that has a pointed rubber snout on it that looks similar to the end of many air nozzles. Personally I just take the hammer housing off of mine every once in a while and clean it and make sure there is are no damaged parts, etc and hand fill it with some good grease. My 3/4" and 1" drive guns have both been done this way for over 10 years of use and have never given me any problems.

That"s a good idea . . . I think I"ll try that . . . might be useful to have a look inside anyway since I don"t know its history. Do you just use automotive bearing grease?

I actually used a grease we get from Lubrication Engineers that is a sticky EP grease. It stays where you put it as well as being resistant to hammering out from between the parts. The main thing though is you want a grease that will stay on the parts and not get thrown to the outside of the housing where it doesn't do any good.
