What truck to buy?

I have a 5000# travel trailer and my current F150
302 4x4 doesn't have the guts to get it over the
hills. I'm leaning toward Chevy (new or recent
used) and think I need a 350 or so. The new Chevy
1/2 tons have a 5.3 as their biggest option, and
the 3/4's have a 6.0. But the 3/4's are 1000#
heavier and I'm thinking the extra weight would
suck up the extra horsepower. Anybody "been there,
done that"?

I have a 1 ton, single axle, 4x4 Chevy Silverado. Truck is 1990 std. cab model with 454 gas & 3 spd auto trans. I love it and it has done everything I asked, hauling, pulling and daily driver. I have over 300K on original engine with little degradation in performance. Mileage 18-21 unloaded, 15-17 fully loaded.

I am not fond of the 350s because seems no matter what you do to them you can only get ~17-18 mpg.

When I need torque to get a heavy load moving I drop it into 4 low, 1st gear and "crawl" until load is moving. I plan to keep this truck as long as I can. When it does come time to replace it will go with Diesel, probably FORD powerstroke. (can't beleive die-hard chevy man gonna buy a ford).

From conversations I've had they have the most torque for value, good motors and last forever.
HTH,

I had many truck and a few motor homes in my 25 years of driving. In the 80's I used chevey's.
82,84 single cabs,85 crew, 86 suburban and now an 88 single for the teen. All were half ton excepted the crew cab. Thoughs half tons would go through brakes every 6 months seems like. The 82 and 84 was a 6.5 diesel. 82 was a good engin, 84 was not. the others were 350's. In the early 90's, I bought a 92 F250 diesel and loved it. I still drive it today with over 250K miles on it.
Wife had a 92 E150 Van with a 351 and put 200K on it and than it finale died. My diesel still starts like day one. Wife now drives a 99 F350 powerstroke crewcab and there is a night and day difference between hers and mine.
Yes, we pull trailors. Three horse slant load, 16 ft flat bed, 9 horse goose neck, 32 ft goose neck (for my tractors) and 16 ft cargo for her craft shows.

My bottom line is.....since I used the diesel's, I'll never go back to gas. Torque is important more than high horse power if your pulling.

The diesel will give you more torque per CI and use less fuel plus twice the miles. You can drive them well over 200K miles....

Yes only my 2 cents.

Tim, I am not going to tell you what you should buy, but I will shed some light on these new engines. Almost all new trucks have overhead cam engines, with the exception of Dodge. This for the driver means fewer moving parts and the ability to make more HP with a smaller engine. Next thing is only Dodge still uses iron heads. I am a ford fan myself, but I despise aluminum heads on any engine. If you can afford diesel, go with Jimp's advise, if no diesel look for recent used with cast iron heads. Hope you find this useful.

Tim

I have two trucks 95 Chevy with a 350, and a 97 Ford F250 with a powerstroke. For light hauling I'll use the Chey, had a 1 yard of gravel it last weekend boy you should of squat. The F250 would not have done that. We pull a 35 ft camping trailer from time to time and the F250 drops down to 13-15 MPG, and empty is 19-21 MPG. Like the others have said the 3/4 tons will be heavier but work less on pulling the loads. I really don't worry about going fast anymoree, I like the stopping and 3/4 ton will be better at it than the 1/2 ton. Go with 3/4 ton My 2 cents good luck !

i think you have it right. most people are worried about power. being able to keep up with cars off the stop lights. its the handling and stopping that keeps you comfortable and out of the newspaper wrecks section. i like the f250 with 1 ton axle for hauling. but it'll impact your spine when empty.

Speed, power, it all depends on how fast you want to go. I know times are different now, but as a kid I used to take the farm truck, (an F-5 and an F-6 ford) and go get a load of lime or fertilizer, up to 7-8 tons and a 3 ton truck. Had a flathead V8 in them, about 100hp. One truck had a 4 speed the other a 4 speed with a 2 sp axle. you didn't go too fast but we always got there. As I said, things are a little different not, but I am amused at the power some think they need to haul something. A chasis though with springs and axles is worth having. And trailer brakes of course.

Hey Tim,

What do both of the replies have in common? They recommend a 3/4 ton. True, it is heavier and that will eat some horsepower. However, the heavier duty components deal with the stresses of towing a LOT better, heat up less and all that translates to more power available for the job at hand. A travel trailer isn't that heavy compared to some things, but it sure does have a lot of wind resistance. A car running steady state down the interstate consumes a fraction of the total horsepower the engine has to deliver. An airplane cruising along steady state uses nearly ALL the horsepower the engine has to deliver, that's why you can't put a car engine in an airplane without SERIOUSLY upgrading the crankshaft. A 3/4 ton and a big block will deal with the situation better. I've never had a problem towing from 3 to 5K pounds with a 1/2 ton and small block, but I slow down to between 20 and 40 MPH going over passes (and don't mind doing that because I only do this when I move household goods). My dad has a travel trailer (26 feet) and just switched from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton and says there is no comparison.

Good luck,

Go with a Ford 250 with a diesel, preferrably the powerstroke 95 or96 or later.
This will give you all the towing power you need and the milage will be much better than a gas. Your empty milage will be around 17-19 mpg and loaded, it will be around 13-15mpg.
Been there and done that 3 times.

The F250 Diesel is a good choice. I went with the F350 V10 (gas). Around here the cost of diesel is about 20 cents gal. higher than gas. The gas mileage is about 1.5 to 2 mpg better with the diesel. Overall fuel cost about the same. The V10 (310HP) seems to pull better at highway speeds with a heavy trailer and the "noise" difference is very noticeable. The powerstroke diesel is a great engine, but I am really learning to like the V10.
