I just bought an older but sturdy looking chainsaw, the Poulan 4000, produced until 1988. I've downloaded the manual, which indicates use a 16:1 gas/oil mixture, or if using the "genuine Poulan" oil, a 32:1 mixture. On the newer saws I have, I'm using the same 40:1 mix I use with other 2-cycle engines.
Anyone out there with experience on these saws? What mixture are you using now?

Thanks, guys, for the responses. Sounds like the synthetic blends will take care of ALL the power tools.

My Poulan 3400(?) is labeled for 16:1 fuel mix, ran that after I bought it used and succeeded in oiling the air filter but good. Cut that back to 32:1, had fewer air filter problems and only pack one can for all the saws.

Your mileage may vary.

Oh boy mix ratios, thats good for a 100 opinions, LOL. If you care to read my experiance here it is. If you want maximum life out of the rig quit worrying about mix ratio and learn how to set the carburetor right. A lean two stroke is a siezed or gauled 2 stroke no matter what ratio or magic oil you run. 16-1 ratios and the like goes back not to inferior motor design but back to inferior lubes, most 16-1 will say used 30W non detergent motor oil for mixing oil (unless the Mfg sold the 30W in its own labeled container) Like Bo, I run my favorite brand 50-1 oil in everything at 50-1, antique saws to brand new ones and see zero problems with doing it.

Use what the manufacturer recommends. Fast story..picked up a really old Sears leaf blower...the 32cc type...didn't check the oil mix spec and just ran what I use in other stuff...32-1 in it. Did it for about 14 years and then a sale came up on a similar leaf blower. The design didn't seem to change. Anyhow, the new one called for 32-1 or maybe 40-1, I forget. When I got through reading the owners manual, I put it away and ran across the manual on the old blower..glanced at it and it said to use 16-1. Too late...been running it for years on the 32-1. Didn't seem to hurt it one bit. If it had, the piston would have galled and the cylinder would have scored long ago. One more thing. I have a few outboards and have been using the TW-3 oil in my blower and weed eater/chainsaw...evidently that is the wrong oil for it but.....doesn't seem to hurt. Stuff still runs after a bunch of years.

Still..... use the manufacturers recommended.

If the manual says to use 16:1 you will likely ruin the saw using the 40:1 in it....
I got the wife a mini 2 cycle tiller. I believe it uses 25:1 or something like that. I always use the right mix that the manufacturer specifies.
I had onn older Craftsman /poulan saw that used a different mix too. 25:1 or something like that.
