OT Electric Shocks

Over the past few weeks I'm getting small "shocks" as I exit my car, 2004 Honda Civic. The floor has a carpet with rubber mats. Any idea what causes this ? What can I do to eliminate this ?

Hook a small metal chain to you belt that will drag the ground , this will dissipate the static charge :)

Get some liquid downey and a spray bottle. Mix 1 cup downey to 1 gallon water and mist over your seats and carpet. This will stop static for quite a while. And smells nice. This works great in the house too and is alot cheaper that that febreeze crap people buy to cover odor.

This info came from a guy that does big jobs with computers where static can be a big problem.

You can get your dealer or mechanic to install grounding straps on your car. You may have seen them dangleing under some peoples cars. They look like two strips of rubber that dangle underneath the car. I knew one person that had them installed. She claimed they did the job.

Kind of like the chain dragging under the fuel trucks years ago? I always thought that would be a good idea to relieve the static in a vehicle, until a car I was following a couple years ago was struck by lightning.

Also the "plastic" cloths you wear will cause the static build up. Static guard should do it.

Not sure about what causes this but do have a solution. Keep a dryer sheet in your car. Every once in awhile rub your seat with it, it gets rid of the static and makes your car smell nice to boot. Downey works well or Bounce.

Grab something METAL (if there is such a thing on a modern car) BEFORE sliding over on the seat to get out of the car. If you are grounded BEFORE the static charge builds up, it will continuously discharge, instead of building up to the point it shocks you.

Just Static, sometimes the clothes or shoes you wear can make it worse, depending on the type of material. Try spraying some of the "Static Guard" on the seats and floor mat, or rub a dryer sheet on the seats...
