Finally got to try out my new 13 hp DR Brush Mower last couple of weekends. A lot of my 55 acres is overgrown with brambles that will rip your skin on contact and plenty of saplings and thick brush that you can't even walk through. So far, the Brush Mower is up to the task. My wife used it the most and it took a little bit for her to get used to it (and quit trying to muscle it around) but now she runs it like a champ. I was concerned that it would bother the arthritis in her hands and carpal tunnel syndrome, but it handles very well with very little vibration. The only issue I have is that the shift control lever (1-4,N,R) doesn't exactly line up with the label and it's easy to overshoot when moving from one gear to another, causing you to hunt a bit to get the gear you want. Not a big deal, however. The knobby tires are great and when I did find one spinning or sliding downshill sideways on some hilly terrain, I tried the differential lock (great feature) and that fixed the problem. There were some areas that I hesitated before I went in, but the engine never bogged down or stalled. It did tend to climb the bigger saplings (> 1")before chopping them down (with a lot of racket). The specs say it will cut a 1.5" sapling, but I wouldn't make a habit of it. The mower rides up on them, whacks away and then sometimes the stump gets hung up on the mower deck. Then you've got to wriggle it around and get it off. I've told my wife to just go around them so we can a) leave the tree there, b) take a chainsaw to it or c) transplant it to another spot. All in all, I'm satisfied so far. Just thought I'd let people know what a good product this is (and built in the USA). I'll post back after using it all summer and let you know how it held up.

I have the 17 hp unit and it's a little on the big heavy side so I would think your 13 hp unit would be perfect. Don't worry about chopping up saplings that seem large. I mowed 3 and 4 inch scrub oak down to mulch. If you can get a run at it and push it over it will eat it up. You can beat the living heck out of it and it won't hurt it! The snowblower option is just fair if you are thinking about it for that.

I have used the DRs and they are fine machines. The one I use has just had it's deck spindle bearings replaced after about 9 years of use.

I also got to use the DR ball mower with the bearver blade on it (14 inch round blade with chainsaw chain on it) It works very well so far. I have cut trees upto 6-7 inch diameter with it. It sure beats getting the chainsaw out and gassed up. Not to mention the DR is safer for someone who does not spend a lot of time with the chainsaw, or is wanting to cut down larger bushes where a chainsaw is harder to use. I'm sure an experienced chainsaw user would laugh, but for the weekend warrior it may save a trip to the E.R.

Mike M,
No, my wife will get tired (LOL). I told her this was cheaper than a monthly gym membership (another LOL). Actually, much of the 55A won't see the DR. And I plan to get a small tractor & brush hog down the road to maintain the larger open areas, but for now, the DR will let us get into areas that we could only look at before. And to the others, thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I won't be sorry about this purchase a few years down the road.
