I can not find any specs on a 1977 Dodge D800 with a 413-3 engine, it has a air compressor that is lubed with engine oil.Does anyone remember what oil Dodge recommends for this HD engine? Also how many quarts does it take? Been thinking about using 15/40 .Thanks, Jack

I worked for a ready mix concrete company that ran trucks like that. The recommendation would have been to use straight 30 weight until it got too cold (and thick) for good starting. Then switch to 10 weight, but not if it was going to get above 32 degrees.

Almost any modern oil would be better than that, so the 15W-40 sounds good.

Thanks guys I've been using Shell 15/40 for few years now and just this last fall switched to John Deere "Plus 50" 15/40 in my backhoe so far I'm happy with it and JD states you can use it 50% longer. I do know loggers have switched to it with good starting/winter results.

Ahh synthetic blend...
I guess my feeling would depend on the cost. If it was 50% more expensive than Rotella or Delvac 1300 I wouldn't bother. Otherwise I guess it really doesn't matter. I don't think I'd go 50% longer between changes without oil analysis though...
If you were to really want longer change intervals (with oil analysis) and cold weather starting was very important then don't muck about, go directly to a real group IV/V synthetic (Rotella Synthetic is Group III, not real synthetic) like Mobil 1 or Amsoil. Sure the oil costs twice as much but you can use it twice as long or longer.

If you're really interested do some research, synthetic can offer alot in that area.

Of course then theres people like the guy that sits next to me, he uses synthetic in his vehicles and changes at 4,000 miles. I'd like to get his oil and run it in my vehicles its not even half worn out by that point. He thinks the vehicles will last longer but that doesn't make any sense...

I'll put in the good word for Delvac 1300 15w40, excellent oil.
I dislike Shell since their "synthetic" isn't really synthetic and if they're stretching the truth there what else are they stretching?

Yeah I know Exxon/Mobil is probably stretching the truth in places too, I just haven't caught them at it yet.

The Rotella is a really good choice.
