I just cut down a large white in the front of my house. What will be the best way to get rid of the stump? Burn or use some type of chemical to dissolve it. There is no way to mechanically dig it and grinding it will still leave some of the stump.

If you're not in a hurry here's what works for me.Drill holes into top of stump at least 6 or 8 inches deep then fill with table salt, add salt again once or twice within a month or two.In about 12 or 18 months you will be able to kick the stump outta the ground with your foot.

Grinding the stump will leave some of it ?
All the stumps I have had ground off were ground down to 6" or so below ground level.
Bruning, etc will leave some below ground level as well.

What I have done in the past is to cut the trunk off flush with the ground, or below the ground and then cover with some topsoil and then grass seed, has worked on 2 trees for me.

I have seen someone use a blower with a pipe on it to force feed direct air to the stump to keep it burning.

The last time we burned a stump, some of my daughters friends came over. They had heard from our daughter what we were doing so they brought hot dogs and marshmellows and stuff to make smors. This was on a Saturday nite and these college kids (and us) had a great time with lots of laughs. Sitting around a fire at nite is one of the best forms of entertainment.

I sure hope you didn't use fuel to get the stump started!

chop a small hole in the middle of it, pour your car oil change oil into it. let soak for a few days or so and put more crap oil or diesel fuel in it. if it's huge, put charcoal on the edges of it, let light that ***** on fire!

Why is mechanical removal not an option? If it is too close to a house or other building, I'd be leary of trying to burn it or blast it out. I've removed a good many stumps, bushes, poles etc. that were allowed too close to a foundation, sewer line etc. Any backhoe operator worth his diesel fuel can make short work of this, without damage.

I have done several like this. It requires lots of pine knots or kindeling and a 55 gallon drum with both ends cut out. Put the drum over the stump, it may help if you dig around the stump with a shovel but it is not necessary. Make sure the drum does not sit flush on the ground, you want it to be a ble to draw air at the bottom. Start a fire in the drum with pine knots, keep filling the drum with what ever will burn, old roots limbs pine knots etc, etc. After it burns down, fillit again, it will glow red hot but keep it going all day. Fill ir right before dark, let it burn all night, next morning I always have a hole in the ground where the stump was.

Drill 1" or bigger holes about on a 6" grid. Fill with saltpeter. Cork or Plug. Wait a year. Stump is ready to be burnt, or just leave and it will decompose faster than if you hadn't done it.

If you go back to page 4 of recent topics there's one entitled "Rotting out a stump?" You might want to take a look at that as it covers this situation. Particularly, you ought to see what people have to say about getting a smoldering fire going in the roots---some people had problems with that.

All the best, Stan

I burned one out recently. Dug around the base some, drilled alot of holes and soaked with diesel, motor oil. Took a chainsaw and made some notches in the top. filled with oil also. Kept soaking for a month, refilling as needed, and cover with plastic. Packed firewood on it one day and burn't it up.
