No single anti-virus program will get everything (viruses, spyware, trojans, etc.). You almost have to use several programs to cover yourself. Norton and Macafee both try to do everything, with mixed results and a fairly steep price. AVG Free is pretty good and free - but you get what you pay for. I have never used their paid version so I can"t comment on it. BitDefender is an excellent no-frills anti-virus program. I"ve switched most of my computers over to it after using Norton for years. I"ll switch the rest when their Norton subscription expires. It costs less than Norton and has better heuristics. Google "antivirus software review" and you"ll find a number of other options.

Good luck and safe surfing.

Neal

AVG either pay for it and get the auto updates or get the free system and do it manually. Another vote for Kim Kommandos links.

AVG's top of the line anti-virus and anti spyware. As for free, you get what you pay for. I've tried both Norton & McCaffy's top of the line products. Both let trash in that caused system crashes. BEST solution is to get a MAC. The prices are way down. Just priced a nice 13" dual core laptop with 1 Gig, 60 gig and dual layer drive. A mere $1,300 Canadian. Why I kept purchasing Bill Gates and kept running back to the store for service? I'll have to write it off as being foolish with my $$$ and time.

My Norton Internet Security expired months ago. Each time I start up the computer it's still down in the tray with an x thru it. Click on it and a menu comes up with choices of live update, help, and enable, among others. So I click on enable and as far as I know, I'm still getting the protection I had the day it expired. And at least once every session a pop up slides up from the tray asking if I want to update, which means buying another year. I think it's around $60 or more. A local electronics store occasionally has it on sale plus regular rebate and upgrade rebate. So the rebates add up to the sale price, or free, except for the sales tax.

I don't download music, movies, or any of that generation X, Y or Z stuff. But I do read the scam email and once in a while, forward it to other scammers. So far, so good.

A few years ago I had a Trojan sending virus email to other computers. Norton let it live on, but Spybot Search & Destroy killed it immediately.

Grisoft still has AVG free edition. It works very very well and is lightweight, meaning it won"t eat up your resources on whatever PC you have. Go to the link below and ask those guys, they are very helpful, most of them post everyday on one of these boards. Listen to them, they have GOOD answers.

I only use Computer Associates (CA) E Trust. It blows the doors off the yuppie Norton products.
