I am looking for a decent digital tachometer to use on tractors. This tach does not need to be top of the line I am only going to use it occasionally. Has anybody bought one of the cheap $35.00 off of fleabay?
Local parts stores want about 150.00 for one. thanks JAke

There is some information I want to pass along. If you put the solid wire core sparkplug wires on your tractor, the RF will be more than most digital meters can tolerate. It will make the readings eratic and completely unstable. Using an analog meter will solve it. The other option is to use the regular carbon filament sparkplug wires to tune with and then switch back. The latter is what I had to do with mine.

Snap on sells a handheld tach that you can use as a contact or non contact(laser) tach. I use it to find the rpms of attachments that I make for my skid steer loader. It's a little pricey ($300 4or 5 yrs ago), but its a tough, versatile unit.

They work fine and last about 5/6 years. Then you throw them away and get a new one. You should also be able to pick one up at about any motorcyle shop. Just make sure you get one for a 4 cycle engine, they are different for 2 cycle and 4 cycle. I've got one one on lawn mower, ATV and tractor.

I purchased one of the $35 ones off ebay last summer. I set the RPM's on my JD A with it. My tractor was teched at a local tractor pull and my RPM's were right on according to the tech guys snap-on tach. I dont see any reason to spend more money for the same thing.

I was going to buy one until I figured how to use my Snap-On digital timing light that has a digital tac in it for a Farmall H with a mag. Just hook up the pickup wire to #1 plug wire and power it using my jumper pack.
