I have a '91 Ranger with the Mazda made 5 speed. the F150 tranny is a heavy duty version of this same tranny. Ford recommends 25,000 mi oil changes on mine. The original fluid came out black at somewhere around 25,000 mi. I did a couple of changes in a short period of time to get the crud out and only run AMSOIL synthetic ATF fluid in it. I was changing the fluid at 10,000 mi and then streched it to 15,000 and am now up to 20,000 mi. The fluid comes out clean and looks like new. The synthetic runs cooler and the transmission is as tight as when it was new, it has 220,000 mi on it now. 90wt Gear oil will destroy the syncros, don't even think about it. The thin fluid is used to allow for real tight clearances and fits and still have it function. ATF is not a real good lubricant and is a compromise between gear lube qualities and hydraulic fluid qualities. I cannot say enough for synthetics in this application. I won't use anything other than the synthic AMSOIL ATF fluid, its cheap insurance, and easy to change. Go to an auto parts place and get a plastic gear oil pump that screws in the bottle and has a clear plastic hose with a barb end that snaps in the filler hole, makes refilling a snap. Mine takes 3 qts. There are three rubber plugs in the back of the shifter rail holes. While kinda expensive at $7 each, they get hard and loose and eventually leak and can fall out. When this happens all the fluid is thrown out and you ruin the tranny. Keep good rubber plugs in it. Charles
