Does any one have any ideas on how to build/hook-up to a pressure washer something I could slide under the deck to wash in order to keep the grass from collecting.

TIA

Humm.. are you supose to clean under the deck.. Our POS Murry is at least 10 years old and never been cleaned.. If the grass build up gets too thick the blades knock it off..

Wife keeps about an acre around the house cut with it.. Bought it used 6 years ago not expecting it to last more than a couple of years, now the darn thing won't die..

I"ve used the washout hole method on my new mower. My father had an older mower, and he would drop the ramps on the trailer, drive the mower up half way so you can see under the deck, and hit it with the power washer. Worked well for him...

I have a two year old Troy built Pony. It has the same 42/2 blade deck. If you want to stop any bearing trouble do what I did. Un hook the deck and remove the blades. Take out the spindle assembly and take off the top nut to remove the pulley. Everything will fall apart. Drill a little 1/4 hole in the side and install a zirk fitting. What I did on my bearings was to break one of the seals on the bearings. Face them inwards so the grease can get in to them. This way when you fill up the assemble with your grease gun the last stroke will feel harder and you will see grease ooz out around the good seal. Don't over do the pressure cause you will blow out the seal. Gently does it! I gently grease the spindles at spring and then at fall. They work great and it is about a two hour job. The neighbor had to do his big bad $4000 Johnny Deere bearings last year cause he thought I was nuts to make mine greasable. HE he he he. Give it a try it isn't that hard to do and they will last the life of the machine. Jeffcat

Gotta disagree somewhat on the bearing washout comments.I run cheap MTDs/Murrays/etc.Usually wash out the deck after every mowing, however,I let the mower and deck cool down first and do not spray high pressue water directly into quill bearings.Current"first line"mower is a 1992 MTD,42/2 blade deck.Bearings(sealed ungreasable) have been replaced twice in 14yrs.I don't see that as excessive. Just my thoughts.

Mike M hit the nail right on the head. I know this from experience. I've replaced the bearings on a 50" John Deere mower deck at least 4 times. I now just clean it at the end of the season and NO MORE BEARINGS PROBLEMS. I've also used "slip plate" (Graphite paint) and will say that it does work..... .well a little. It wears off a little too quick. You could always put Slip plate on in the fall after you clean up the deck and before you put it away for the winter to prevent rusting.

Probably obvious: Mow when grass is dry. Graphite paint prevents sticking. They do make a concrete cleaner for a pressure washer but doubt it wouldn't work upside down.

The only time the grass will be dry enough to not stick is if it is dead, and then of course it is obvious that the grass would not need cutting, so I guess you're right.

Tia,

I've used the following on two mower decks and it works great: Get a brass adapter that has male pipe thread on one end and male hose thread on the other end. Drill a hole in the deck near the end of the blade. Cut off the end of a pipe coupling to make a "nut" for the pipe thread end of the adapter. Put the pipe thread end in the hole and hold it in place with the "nut" on the bottom of the deck. Attach a double female hose connecter to the hose thread end of the adapter. You need the kind of connecter where both both ends swivel. All this stays on the deck permanently. When to want to wash out the deck, hook up your garden hose, turn the water on full, and engage the deck drive. Run it until the water runs out clear. When you start it will be pea soup green color.

I did this about 10 years ago and it's still working. I've seen a few new mowers that have the same set up factory installed.

Pete

A downside to washing off decks all the time is that the spindle bearings go bad more often.

Does the mower deck have a "washout" plug on the top of it or a small hole? If so, run the water from the top with the mower deck running. This will wash out the buildup quite well safely and you won't have to get as messy trying to clean the grass buildup out by digging it out by hand. This usally works for me quite well with the push mowers. Just my .02 cents worth hope it helps.

Jim

I've *heard* of burying a section of hose with a nozzle of the end pointed up, flush or nearly so to the ground. You then drive the mower over it, turn on the water, and engage the blades. I don't know if it will work, but sounds interesting.

Get a long crow bar or wrecking bar, you can get the worst of it from the side. I then scrape out good when I sharpen the blades. Also use an old broom handle on the bad wet green stuff.
