Gas powered trash/water pump discharge hose

I am in the process of de-watering several ponds (unwanted in my pastures and created by a plugged tile line) and am using a 2-inch gas powered trash pump. The maximum discharge length is 100 feet and I have not found a trash pump (clear water yes, trash no) that will allow discharge past 100 feet. If I changed my discharge hose to a 3 inch hose, would I increase my length capabilities or would I really mess up the "system"? Anyone try cheating and putting another 50 feet of 2-inch on making it 150 feet total?

My issue is, to get to the final draining place I have to pump pond #1 into pond #2 then into the exit pond #3. I want to run enough hose to go directly from #1 to #3.

I have run a few million gals of water thru trash pumps last year alone on the fires filling my tender up. A couple things to remember 100 ft of head is about 50 PSI of pressure. Pumping up to 100 ft up is about all it can do and at 100 ft it will probley stop flowing. 26 ft of draft means it will pull water up 26 ft but the same thing applys long draft hose slower GPM flow. A pumps rating is normaly free flow(at the pumps discharge) and no real draft/suction drop. The further you have to go down to get water the harder the pump works and slower it pumps. The longer the hose the more pressure drop which also drops the flow GPM. You lose about 2+ psi per 100 ft(depending on type of hose) of 2 inch hose so that means less water pumped. 500 ft of 2 inch hose = 10+ psi loss aprox. Bigger hose less drop. If you ran a 3/4 inch hose you would be lucky to pump a few hundred ft. Mark H.

They do make trash pumps that pump higher but they are called Semi-Trash Pumps cause the higher the presure the closer the tolerance inside the pump and those pumps don't like junk going thru them. I have 2 of them on the truck that pump 195 and 185 ft of head. This picture is my Tender pumping out water at the rate of around 850+ GPM. The Water Cannon is shooting it out about 140 ft. Mark H.

Just a few words on pumps and hose. As a example only, If you use a 2 1/2 inch hose instead of a 1 1/2 inch hose you get pretty close to taking the volume times five.

Thanks everyone. I am off to Northern Tool to get another couple rolls of hose and we'll be back in business. County just finished digging out the brokern tile by the road today but won't put new in until it dries up, hence my pumping water out to hurry that along. I already have a strainer on the suction hose and put the end into a pet taxi to keep it from getting full of cornstalks, etc...seems to work well so far.

Like others have said that is HEAD pressure of lift height . Back when i ran and oil field service co. we pumped water from any stream Creek or river that we could find to fill FRAC tanks and at times it was over a couple thousand feet . Our most popular pump was a 3 inch Honda , we had other pumps in the three inch size but where a lot heavier and if you had to hand carrie one a couple thousand feet would you rather carry the honda or the big Gorman Roupwith the 12 horse Cast iron Briggs and a cast iron pump??? Each Frac tank was 12600 gallon and at times there would be twelve of them to fill at one location . We always sent two pumps so if one went down we had a back up . send along a good supply of gas oil four 20 foot lenghts of suction hose a couple screens and as may five hundred foot rolls of dischare hose and LOTS OF clamps and couplers . IT would take anywhere from 30-90 min. to fill one tank depending on distance . If we could get the one 6 inch pump that we made up to go on the back of a 4x4 tractor then we would send that out. But most of the time it was the three inch Honda . More cost effective over the water trucks or the tractor . one man could do all his owen set up and pumping in 4-10 hours. no stuck trucks no extra operator and no dozer and no tore up trucks.

I am not sure what pump model you have but I bet the 100" you are hearing is total feet of head. which means if you were going perfectly vertical the pump would only pump up to 100 foot. I see no reason you could not go 150 or more with that pump. I have a 2" pacer pump with a 5hp briggs and Ihave 300 ft of 1-1/2 hose with no problem at all. even going up hill approx 10 ft over the 300"
150" going up hill say 10" would only be about 10ft of head pressure plus a couple of feet for friction loss. you should be fine.
p.s I sell and service pumps for a living

Yes, it is rated at 100 feet of head. The pump is an 11,000 gph semi-trash unit with a 4 or 5 hp Honda engine. The salesman assured me head meant discharge length not vertical rise too when I questioned that. I thought 100 feet was awful short. I will get a couple more sections of discharge hose and give it a shot. Thanks!

Get a new salesman while you're at it. If the level of Pond #1 is higher than #2, once it's going, it will flow by gravity alone. But rather slowly.

I think you will be fine. If it were me I would put a strainer on the suction line just to keep the big stuff out of it even though its a trash pump you dont need to be pumping rocks and sticks. also make sure the suction is at least as big as the inlet on the pump (2" inlet=2" hose or bigger)

Good luck

Got 200 feet more of discharge line, 300 total now. It is pumping like mad, no issues at all.

I suppose I am pushing my luck asking if the 26 foot intake rating is total or a vertical rating too. I remember from high school physics something about the maximum lift of a pump, but if I am only lifting a foot or two, can I use more than 26 feet of rigid intake hose?

That"s vertical, too. The pump won"t know how long the hose is, within reasonable length, just how far it has to lift.
Good luck, Wm
