OT: Pools, anybody have one?

The wife wants to get a inflatable pool. $60 or so at Kmart. Pool is about 3feet high and about 12 feet in diameter. What is the extra money for home owners insurance for this. I know that having a pool is a big liability if someone drowns in it, when I am at work and it is a stranger trespassing. My home owners insurance is $850/year and if any of you guys have an outdoor pool let me know what your home insurance is for having the pool. If the insurance is alot more $$$ then I will say no to the pool.

I have had a pool for the past 12~15 years. From a discussion that started out as a small one like you are suggesting, we got an above ground 24" x 4" deep. (Used unit for $400.00 and I put a $200.00 liner in it.)

The above ground was ok when it was hot enough to get the water way up but they lose heat through the walls quickly. The result is that they are never warm enough to enjoy for very long.

Local regulations required a fence for anything bigger than what we had. Insurance was no big deal. Check both no matter what.

Current house came with a large in-ground and it"s way better than the above ground. Easier to clean and maintain and the sidewalls are insulated to keep the temp up once it gets there. Chemicals aren"t a big deal after you figure it all out. No matter what you do, do not buy cheap chemicals. I get my stuff from "Leslie"s Pool Supplies" as well as "In The Swim".

The little blow up job may be good for a while. If you are the swimmer, think big. No matter what you choose, get rid of the trees around it.

It shouldn't cost alot for insurance, a quick call to your agent will answer that.
Kids are drawn to water (pool) like men are drawn to tools and tractors, so you have to keep whatever you get secure, either fence or cover.

Nobody will enjoy a 3ft inflatable pool. For a few bucks more there are those rollup pools complete with pump & filter. What is your location? A pool that isn't 80+F and better 85F is a just a freezing cold misorable thing to shiver in. A heater of some sort maybe required, a pool blanket certainly is with any pool. The ice just melted off our pool yesterday. We burned 450 gallons of LP heating it last year.

I have a 3x12 round pool from walmart. It's in a box out in the shed where it's been for the last 12 years. Get a bigger one. Especially deeper. Three feet is just a deep bathtub.

We got given a pool bout that size.
Filled it and used it a weekend and then took it down. Here in Ontairo if it is over "X" inches then must have a fence around it to code.
Was not worth it to me at the time so we scraped the pool.
Check local by laws

A pool is a hole in the ground that you throw money into. Is the wife going to spend about 1 hour or so a day cleaning it ? And about $25 or more on chemicals each month ?

I don't have a pool, but the wife has a hot tub in the back yard. We put up a metal building over it and it is enclosed with a locked door. She takes care of the bills so I don't know what the increase in insurance premiums are. I know that the electric bill went up considerably but it sure is nice to relax in...especially when there is snow all over the ground outside.

My parents have an inground pool and for their insurance company to cover it, and for it to be inspected when put in, it had to have a fence around it. As for an above ground pool there's not much chance of someone walking off in it so I believe the fence requirement is waived. In other words you have to physically try to get in and can't just fall in accidentally. As far as the bladder types with the inflatable top ring, personally, I wouldn't worry much about it insurance wise. I see the inflatable ring type all the time right in the middle of front yards, etc with no "security measures" at all. Heck, the way things are nowdays you'd be just as liable if someone trespassed and drowned in a five gallon bucket of rain water as you would if they got in your pool. If your really worried have anyone entering sign a waiver of liability, and post Pool Warning signs along with No Trespassing signs and then don't worry about it..... The main worry with the inflatable ones is to make sure you set it up on a level place or it will get lopsided and will probably collapse. Secondly, make sure the ring doesn't deflate or it will collapse. Went through three different pools last year before I got one that would stay inflated for at least 24 hours. Don't know what brand you'll be getting, but if you have a problem call the customer service and tell them. After setting up and filling two 12 foot pools last summer, for them both to deflated and collapse, (called each time and they sent me a new pool each time) they finally sent me a much better made 16 footer that actually stayed inflated and full. It was alot of trouble but at least they did offer true customer service. -----Good luck whatever you do.

I don't have one but we discussed with our ins. agent. I don't recall how much more it would cost but I do remeber him telling me that I HAD to put a secure fence with a LOCKED gate around it for him to cover it, State Farm was who I was with at that time.... Call your agent and get the scoop. HTH. Logan
