My 031 AV started to get hard to get started then will not rev out for a while . It gets going fast enough for the chain to turn and cut but with a bogged down sound to it then after it gets warmed up it will run good , after going back to a idle which it does well sometimes it will take right of sometimes not . The warmer it gets the better it runs . I put a new fuel filter in the tank , removed the muffler and cleand it out which nether seemed dirty . Adjusted the hi-lo with no change and there is no change with the air cleaner on or off . I`m getting to the end of my shade tree chainsaw smarts !! Need some more ideas before I take it to the shop in town .

an air leak in the fuel line is most likely the problem. I had the same thing on my 023.

I have 2 .031 saws. They run great since day one.Don't let the repairman talk you out of them...They were proubly the best saw stihl ever made.Have the cab.rebuilt-cleaned.Might cost you around 70.00 but well worth it.Just had one of mine done .It was doing the same thing that ur was.It runs like a top now.I have had these saws for 25 yrs.Looking for another 25...Best one money can buy.....idontno

I've still got a couple of 030s and 031s that I took in on-trade back in the early 70s - so they have to be at least 40 years old. Same with an old S10 and 040 I have. Some use air-chokes to shut off instead of an electric switch. All great saws - in my opinon - even Stihl does not make them like that anymore. I was a Stihl mech. (as well as other things) up to the time when Stihl started using plastic instead of magnesium and started selling some badly built consumer saws e.g. the 011, etc. In regard to fixing the carb - pretty easy job on an 031.

In regard to the reply about the reed-valve- it was never used in any of the 030s, 031s, etc. In fact - none of the older Shihls used them - they are all piston-ported - no reed-valves and no roto-ports. Your problem sounds like a common one - especially if the chain is not kept sharp. Cutting with a dull chain makes more dust instead of chips - and eventually it gets into the gas tank. The dust is fine enough it passes through the tank-pickup filter but . . . gets trapped in the little filter-screen inside the carb. It's an easy 15 minute fix - if that is the problem. Just pull the carb off - and pull off the fuel-pump plate. That is the big cover on the carb. opposite the one that has the needle and seat. Your 030/031 can have either a Tillotson or a Walbor carb - but either one has that little screen that plugs. May be a one-bolt cover or a four-bolt cover. When it does get plugged - the saw has little power when cold - but as it warms up gets more power.

I had that happen on my 024, after much cussin', I discovered that the chain brake had somehow been applied. The saw worked just fine after that.

I've got a simular problem with an O-31 saw only it won't run fast enough to pull the chaff out of the cut also changed the filter in tank. About to get a new saw.talking to the local dealer he said the fuel line could of cracked so it can't get fuel to work.

I use model aircraft fuel line, 70 a foot. Take a long length, push it thru the fuel line hole in the tank from the outside, use longnose pliers to pull it out the gas fill hole. Put on a clean/new filter and pull it back into the tank, leaving enough line to drop down into the lowest point in the tank. Move the tank around so you can see how it dangles. Install the tank and cut the line to the correct length.

It's a classic case of lean running condition brought on by either a clogged orifice or as the dealer said a cracked or restricted fuel line or fuel filter. I would first go to the dealer and ask for some fuel system cleaner and if that did not work then you will have to try cleaning or replacing the fuel filter attached to the end of the fuel line inside of the tank. It is a filter that is weighted and falls to the lowest part of the tank to keep it in the fuel when the saw is tipped on it's side.

It may require some special attention. The 031 is rather old. The problem could be the reed valve or the carburetor diaphragm. Or ignition.
