Loud pool pump motor

I have a swimming pool pump motor that is real noisy, Sounds like gravel is in it, I wanted to have it all fixed before warm weather gets here so this weekend I took it all apart,I blew it out with high pressure air and checked it all over, I removed the covers on both ball bearings and put some fresh grease in them (Which they didn't need ) The bearings are nice and tight with no signs of wear, I then put the motor back together without the pool pump attached and bench tested it, It's still as loud as a dump truck with sounds like it has gravel in it, the motor spins free and free wheels when you unplug it, nothing is hitting , rubbing or scraping inside the motor housing.
Any ideas at all on where this noise is coming from?

Before giving up on the motor, are you sure it's not the pump? Couple days ago mine started making a lot of noise. Took the pump housing apart and found a half dozen acorns stuck in the impeller intake. The strainer basket had cracked and allowed some trash into the pump.

New motor is less than $50.00 at Surplus Center. Mine is getting louder too and I figured that would be the best way to go. Should solve the problem and get me through another 12 years of service.

if it is a split- phase or capacitor start motor it will have a centrifugal operated switch . the govneror like mechanism on the shaft inside the motor maybe making the noise .

Any chance the pump is cavitating? They'll sound like a handful of pebbles in an empty soup can if they cavitate.

Check the pump inlet to make sure it isn't plugged.

I would not mess with pool motors.There is to much chance for current leakage in an old motor.
