Impact Wrench Socket Retainer

Hello All.

I just recently bought an air compressor, and as such I need to start building up my inventory of air tools to go along with it. I went over to a used tool ship and got myself a used Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench. I have no idea what the model is, or any of the specifications are for it, just that its 1/4" air inlet and 1/2" drive.

My problem is that on the drive, it looks like there is supposed to be something on the end that keeps the socket from falling off of the gun while Im using it. Right now there isnt anything there at all.

Is this something I can easily replace? Or do I just need to make sure that I hang on to the socket when I move the gun around?

Ill have to take a look into if any stores close to me have a ring, and if not then maybe Ill find one somewhere on the internet.

I was most worried that it was something about the gun that was broken, since I bought it used. But thanks all for removing those fears!

The "O" ring is easy to install. The easiest way to install the retaining ring is to roll the anvil on the ring on a concrete surface. It will eventually snap on.

Just got the o-ring and steel lock ring at CarQuest -Think it was about $3.75 for both pieces

I went to a Chicago Pneumatic parts & service store and got a rubber replacement ring for mine. It may be an off the shelf O-ring but I had not been able to find one elsewhere that worked as well.

Clarkbug; don't have to look very far for retaining ring for impact sockets, a rubber O ring does the job real good, cheap and easy fix Ken

I made one with a piece of music wire wrapped around an arbor. Took of couple of tries before finding the right size.

There should be a ring retainer on the very end of the drive to keep the sockets from falling off. some folks take the ring off purposely so they can change sockets easily with greasy hands. the retainers are sometimes tight enough that a socket will not come off without prying it. i took mine off just because of needing to change sockets often and quickly. maybe a name brand tool truck would have one....such as snap-on, mac tools etc.
