Saw the post below about the best grinder so I thought I'd post about the best grinding wheel I've found to use on a grinder. I've tried just about every name brand and non name brand available over the years and the best I've seen for cutting ability as well as life expectancy are the Norzon wheels from Norton. I don't know the specifics of their makeup except to say they have a ceramic of some kind in them. Unlike most wheels the material that they take off doesn't look like dust, instead it looks similar to chips you'd see coming off a lathe or a mill except in miniture. In other words they are agressive as heck. Expect to pay a little more for them than most of the other brands but in the end you'll get more than enough of an extended life out of them to make up for the extra cash up front.

Norzon wheels use zirconium for their abrasive rather than silicon. It is a denser material, allowing it to take higher heat before breaking down. It is harder than silicon so it cuts better. When considering labor savings from faster cutting and the savings from longer wheel life, the higher price of zircon wheels is still a bargain.

Norzon are good but about 3 or 4 times the price. I worked in a shop that specialized in chromium carbide overlay. They used norzon but on chromium carbide nothing grinds fast. Something that would take 10 minutes on steel would take over an hour on the hard facing. If there was too much to grind we would gouge as much off as possible. Dave
