Hi, 2003 Pontiac Grandam....Had a small head gasket leak, dealer wanted 1500 to fix. I tried bars leak pellets last weekend.,..they seem to have worked, but on this car, there is no radiator cap, it is on the side overflow tank...had to get pellets into the hose that goes into the radiator - 1 inch diameter hose. SInce last weekend, the cooling system isnt working well...it gets up to 240 degrees on the gage and seems like it has a lot of air in it. Also, no heat from the heater until it gets really hot, then you get heat, but it is intermittent.

THere is a bleeder/air release on top of the water pump, that I had coolant coming out of last night when bleeding. But today, I have the same problems, no heat in the heater and the hose coming out of the bottom of the radiator is not under pressure (it's soft) and the hose coming out of the water pump to the radiator is not pressurized either. I've bled and bled the system several times, today, nothing comes out of the valve on the top of the water pump....
Did I plug up the radiator? I sure hope not....used a whole 8 ounce bottle according to the directions...

Thanks in advance!

The only thing I've ever had bars leaks do is plug thermostats and I'd guess thats whats happened here...
Now you've got to get that crap back out, lousy job. Figure on flushing it 5-10 times...

Just fix stuff when its broke, additives will at best just mask the problems.

Pull both heads, replace also the gasket that isn't leaking (yet) and use new coolant mixed with deineralized water. Not tap water or water softener water. All ne whead bolts are required or you will get to do this job again. Check with GM and find out if this has been a common problem and if they have a silent recall notice.

In the Stl. area there is a class action suit pending against GM concerning the orange "Dex-cool" type coolant. It is causing head gasket failure and intake failure. Look in the fill tank, and you will see orange jelly. My wife's Malibu did this, so I flushed out the orange and changed to green. So far so good. Sorry, it sounds to late on the Grand AM.

My wife ran over a skunk and thinks she needs a new car. She really has a sensitive nose. I think it will go away. Do you have any ideas or help? Thanks. p.s I have 2 boxes of mothballs inside it right now.

Last fall I managed to hit 2 dead skunks in the road. It will take months for the smell to go away. Washing doesn't seem to help. You need to wait for the oils to evaporate. You will also smell it on the car every time it rains for about 6 months. Good luck.

Thanks Don L and Ray P. We are in Mich 20 miles north of Toledo. Back to skunk please, I assumed you meant coffee grounds from brewed coffee. My wife says you mean fresh, out of the can coffee. Please help. I can't win but I love her 2 much.

Odor is probably under car, around wheel wells. Get a power washer, and wash it down as best you can all under. Other option is to use a carwash that does a decent underbody wash. It will disipate with time.

Bar's leak will coatl heater cores and reduce heating. N ever seemed to hurt radiator though. Used probably 40 -50 times. The original pellet type and older vehicles like 1990 and earlier.

I doubt the bars leak will fix a bad head gasket. I use the newer kind of bars leak that is NOT the pellets it is ground up finer stuff. I've had good luck with it on sealing leaks without plugging up stuff.

I ruined about 3 cars/trucks about 40 years using such snake-oil as bars leak. Will NEVER use another additive product for coolant leaks. I have seen it plug heater cores, reduce cooling, etc. Seen rod-outs as only way to restore a Bars Leak treated radiator. I learned the hard way. Tom

Ernie's right. Ya gotta pull da heads.

Your engine is pumping air into the cooling system, simple as that.

Radiator stop leak will not fix a head gasket, cylinder pressure is too high, will blow out and pump exhaust gasses into cooling system. the exhaust gasses are causing poor coolant circulation and the higher temperature will cause further gasket failure. The only fix for a blown head gasket is to pull it apart and check everything out. Too much antifreeze will ruin the bearings.
