OT: Cell Phones Rant question

My three month old Cingular Motorola cell phone has quit ringing so I called the warranty number and spent 30+ minutes with someone, I think in India, telling me how to turn on the ringer. Of course that didn't work. I was also asked if I dropped the phone, which would probably void the warranty. I asked for an address for warranty repairs as stated in the 80 page manual and was told to go to the Cingular store.

So I did. The salesman said there were no phones left of that model. I said I didn't expect a new one, just an address for warranty repair. He said there is no warranty because I was given the phone free as a replacement for a 5 year old Cingular phone and Cingular had done me a favor and they are not going to do any more favors by repairing it under warranty. So much for customer service after 5 years.

Now I'm looking for a better phone on ebay and many need to be "unlocked". I find there are dozens if not hundreds of unlocking services between ebay and Craigslist, charging up to $25.

The question is how are all these people privy to unlocking codes and how can I get the codes and the info to unlock any phone I may buy?

About a year ago I upgraded to a Motorola phone that I ended up hating. It had a flaky power connector that you had to jiggle in order to get it to charge. Called Cingular and was told I still had 14 months left "til I could get a free upgrade. They offered to sell me a phone. Cheapest started at $150. I asked what the "get out" penalty on my contract was and they said "$175". My reply: hmmmm why don"t I just pay the price and go get a free phone with a new Verizon contract.... Long story short...they passed me to "the customer retention department". I got a new phone for the same price I"d pay for a regular upgrade (the $50 upgrade fee).

Bottom line: they really want to keep customers long term....they just need to be shown how.

I no longer have a contract; that's probably why they gave me the cheapest phone. To get a "better' phone would require a new 2 year contract and upgrade fee plus tax on the retail value of the phone.

I've bought several unlocked cell phones from ebay and have had no problems. But you need to call cingular and tell them what kind of phone you are switching to, they keep track of that now and it makes it easier to troubleshoot problems if you have any.
Buy one from someone with a good rating. If you get a cellphone that was owned by someone who didn't pay their bill, the phone company can block the phone by its serial number.

I'm looking for a cell phone that uses a (my) sim card so I don't need to call Cingular. Never had to call them when I used the old 5190 phones. If I find another one locally, I can stick my card in it to see if it works. Many of the sellers on ebay didn't own the phone they're selling, so they have no idea if the bill was paid or not.

If you can snag a phone off ebay that is on your service you are home free, just move the chip from your phone to the new phone and keep talking.

The lock thing they are talking about are phones locked to a service provider. For example, you can't use a Cingular phone on any other network till it gets unlocked.

Listen to Paul Harvey on the radio. When he tells you to go buy a Tracfone..Do it! I have two and love them. No hassels and no contracts. They are not the cheepest but you are in control. Good service and have never been out of contact in the mid Atlantic region. My $.02 jeffcat

I got my first cell phone about 4 years ago. This has got to be the most hard to understand, aggravating, disgusting, service I have ever had. Cell phones are great but their providers are the pits.

In past experience(you don na wanna know) I have found that the factory installed lock code is the last four digits of either the serial number or the issued(most likely) phone number. Prolly hard to find out on a used phone unless the original number is still in the Phone Info.
