I've a friend trying his best to buy my miller big 40. I've had this for a number of years mounted on a trialer pulls good and welds even better and I have no idea of what it might be worth. And yes I have looked on fleabay, didn't see any thing close to 300amp,100% duty cycle.

How old is your Big 40? If the serial number starts with an H it is a 70's version. If it starts with a K it is an 80's version. The second letter tells the exact year. A is 70, B is 71, C is 72 ect. Same for an eighties machine. A good Big 40 should be worth $2500 and up depending on shape and if there are lots of used welders around. It also depends on if someone is looking for one when your selling it. A Big 40 is a good machine. Has an F163 Continental the same as a Lincoln SA 200. It has 3000 watts of ac power for tools as well. Miller can get more amps out of an engine than Lincoln because their machines are an alternator design which takes less power than a true DC generator. They use a rectifier to get DC current but it is a 3 phase alternator so it is almost as smooth as a generator. Dave

I've used a lot of differnt welders over the years but have yet to find any one that I can just pick up and do a good job with out even thinking about it.This is of corse my own personal welder and in fact monday doing a job with it on a d7. So if you can shed some light on this my thanks.

Forget ebay, it's not a good indicator anyhow. Check with some welding supply businesses. Your welder should be worth in excess of 50% of what a new unit would cost.

Here is a link to a better way to shop on-line.
