Going to be needing a chop saw for some metal projects coming up soon. How has either of the Harbor Freight saws working out for you guys? They have one for about $50 and another for around $100. Either one worth it or should I get a Makita or Milwaukee?

Hi Mike,

I've had good luck with mine. It gets low to moderate use and, as lightweight as it feels, moderate use seems to be about all I'd want to demand from it.

I've had pretty good luck with the generic blades that were available there when I got the saw. I later bought some of the Russian ones but haven't had to break them out yet. The generic blades don't strike me as significantly worse than the name brand blades we go through a lot of where I work.

All the best, Stan

I got a DeWalt D handle in reply to Mike Deschler, 04-04-2007 11:00:49
I bought a refurbished Dewalt from the local HF. The one with the D handle. It's got pretty good power. I the HF blades are crap, but I'm still on my first pack of them. Keep your blades dry. If they get wet it really makes them cut slow. bjr

I've had the 50$ one for about 8mo now.

Works ok for homeowner use. if I ran a fabrication shop. no go.

I cut mostly 1" x 1/2" bar stock, 5/8 round cold rolled. up to 3" angle or 2" squre tubing.. and some flat 1/4 and 3/6 stock.. An occasional 1 or 1.25" hardened pin.. etc. Mostly mild steel though.

Seems to work ok.. just don't force it. The russian blades they sell are low quality.. AND cheap.. When i run out of the 2 5 packs i bought.. I'll get a better brand disc blade for it..

I have one of there cheap ones and it stopped working in less then a year. I now have one of the cheap buffalo chop saws it stopped working in less then a month but I was able to take it back and get another one for free. I say go with the best you can go with and it will last a lot longer then one of the cheap ones. The cheap ones will get you by but you get what you pay for

I have the HD $100 one. It is identical to my old Black & Decker chop saw that I used for 20 years and finally wore the gears out. The HF clone seems as good. Check that the brush holder caps are tight and run the new one with no load for a couple minutes to seat the brushes.
