What are the symptoms of a bad map sensor. Engine is a 1988 350 gas Chevy engine. Previous owner had the engine scanned several different times. Results were always inconclusive.

My daughters 88 Suburban had 2 problems. 1) enging temp sensor went bad, ECU thought the engine was at 500 degerees, (at least according to the resistance value i read) so was REAL hard to start when cold but was ok after warming up. 2) fuel pump could not pump enough to go past 30 or 35 mph without giving some kind of "lean" code.

PS - Some engines have one temp sensor for the dash gauge, and another for engine temp for ecu. Its been a while and I dont remember what the 'burb had.

I have seen these things give you the stall at idle problem. 1. Fuel filter
2. Fuel pump. My 89 suburban did this. The pump worked, but pressure was on the low side of normal. Apparently too low.
I have heard this will do it too:
3. Worn out distributor (gear, shaft, etc.)

It has a new fuel filter. The distributer has been replaced with a used one. (I have the old distributer in a box of miscellaneous items that came with the truck). Previous owner said these two "new" items made no improvement.

The shop's next suggestion was either fuel pump or MAP sensor. Having spent enough money and losing confidence in the mechanic, the owner said no to having more work done.

The shop had checked the fuel pressure and said it was marginal low. If the fuel pump were defective wouldn't the engine starve at higher rpms or harder pulls when fuel demands are highest?

I can only speak for mine, but it never had a problem at higher RPMs. Only died at idle. I don't know the reason for sure. Possibly at different throttle positions, the injector pulses were longer, or faster. (That's a guess).

I replaced my own once - it had a rear tank (~35 gallons), and I replaced one for a friend - it had the side-mounted tank. That may or may not be practical for you. You'll want to wait until the tank is empty unless you have a pump or something to empty it. You basically loosen the straps that hold it up and lower the thing. You can put a jack under it with a scrap of plywood to help lower it, or whatever you come up with. It's not particularly hard, just a dirty job. There's a little retaining ring that you spin off, then pull the pump out of the tank. Brush/wipe off the dirt off the top of the area first so a lot of crud doesn't fall into the tank. There may be clearance on your vehicle to access it without removing the tank, but not so on the ones I was involved with.

If I recall, the pump was in the $50 range, and it took a couple of hours to install. I've done the thing where you replace the sensors, computer modules, etc. in the likelihood order the service manual says, but on any vehicle I've messed with, it's never been the sensor itself, but rather some other factor not considered in the diagnostic flowchart, like a vacuum leak, a bad ground, etc. (Or a low-pressure pump ;-) )

Of course, with my luck, it's probably the MAP sensor ;). The only problem on replacing electrical items, if you find it wasn't the problem, the parts store generally will not let you return an electrical part once installed.

What is vehicle doing ? check engine light on ?
MAP sensor is 3 wire sensor , grd , 5volt ref and signal return . You can check these with a voltmete backprobing connector. Signal return should be roughly 1.3- 1.8 at idle . Long as you have no vacuum leaks and engine is in good shape . Higher than that will make it run rich .If it is high , eliminate any vac leaks before condeming MAP as bad .

Engine likes to stall at idle. However stalling can usually be prevented by fiddling with the gas peddle at these times. It runs perfectly when above approx. 1000 rpms. It can be difficult to start, but always does. After stalling or when it's been wanting to stall it seems to start best without touching the gas peddle. Sometimes I can smell the smell of the engine running lean. Previous owner had many things changed. Coolant sensor, knock sensor, pickup coil, distributer, egr valve, fuel filter, tried a different throttle body unit for a week or two. The check engine light is not on. I may be missing something. I just got the vehicle last night. I have not worked on it at all yet.

Let's flip the question around: Why do you think the MAP sensor is bad? There's a lot of components that can fail on that vehicle (I owned one myself), but I don't think the MAP sensor is one that fails a lot.

I would think a bad MAP sensor would set a hard code. You don't need scan tool to read the codes, by the way; you can jumper the ALDL connector and read the flashes on the check engine light.

Manifold absolute pressure. Let's say this is part of a feedback loop to the ECU/ECM to tell it when to fire and degree of enrichment at the throttle body. It works in a loop with other sensors. The 350 is a dang good engine but much of this piddly stuff is a lost art to diisect but many engines are doomed to fail emmisions or get bad gas-miles because one or another sensor has failed. The big-box analyzers were good at detecting such things in static running Now however there are a few alternatives. What you need is a tech with a new-fangled "on-board" type analyzer equipped with an older program for looking at what goes on when you drive. There are variables on the road which are even more pronounced than what can be seen on a dyno.
