Later this summer, I'm getting my Avery A home for a restoration. I know one of the head bolts is broken off (I'm guessing pretty even with the level of the block). Anyways, once I get everything apart (hopefully without doing more damage) and getting out the broken bolt, should I go with new bolts when reassembling the engine OR should I put in a stud of the proper length and use the stud/nut system. My Masseys use the studs (flathead 4 cylinder Continentals) and it sure seems to work well. What is the advantage of one system over the other?

Alberta Mike, every time you remove and install a head bolt there is a chance of damage or wear to the block. with studs, the stud is torqued in the block once. every time the head is removed the wear occurs on the stud and nut, not to the block threaded hole itself. this is important for people like racers that are always fiddling with the head or valves. also when torqueing a bolt you are stretching and twisting the bolt. these two stresses add up to make it easier to break the bolt. on studs you are twisting the nut and stretching the stud, less stress. thats why on a nut and bolt system, you are suspost to tighten the nut while holding the bolt from rotating with a wrench. studs have other advantages and requirements like course thread on one end vs fine on the other. tight fit one end vs medium fit on other. be aware of the quality of the stud you purchase. i quessing it should be SAE 5 to maybe as high as SAE 8. hope i have not muddied the h2o

Mike, the studs make it easier to keep your head gasket in place when replacing the head. I always worry about the gasket sliding over out of position.

Mike,

Most high-performance engines use studs/nuts for one reason, better clamping. The stud/nut system is more expensive than bolts. You are far less likely to break off a stud, especially at or below the level of the block deck, than you are with bolts.

your stud/nut system is the best rod
