Oxygen Acetylene Cylinder Exchange

We have a new Tractor Supply and I see that they have Oxygen & Acetylene cylinders available through an outfit called Gaspony. Do any of you have any experence with this company or the exchnge program at Tractor Supply? Our other local gas suppliers are kinda hard to deal with when you own your tanks they would rather have you leasing their products.

GasPony is a subsidary of Scott-Gross Gas out of Lexington. They already won a lawsuit from other gas suppliers about their right to sell and refill cylinders. The other companies wanted to stop it as they make more money by leasing. When I was in NY I couldn't get my own tanks filled due to state law so I researched it here in KY. I just turned my leased tanks in and will purchase my own from TSC and save some money.

I got pretty ticked off at the company that filled my oxygen tanks for 25 years because they had not stopped to exchange my tanks. They said my account was current and had no history of bad debt towards them so they had no explination why the driver forgot me. A month or two later I happened to be in town and confronted the driver as to why he forgot to stop. He said he could not drive down my street as it was not a comercial street. Seems homeland security put a stop to it. Just another form of government getting more powerful and demanding.

I own my own tanks and have for a num. yrs. Is their any one on this forum that really thinks that RENTING is the way to live? Not for this boy. Yes I know that I don't get my same tanks back. But their either good or bad and being I got them new I don't worry about it, I am just not into renting anything unless its heavy equiment that is used on a day by day and only on a job that I have to.

I do. All of the tanks in my shop are rented. I teach in a small high school and we have 3 Argon mix, 3 oxygen, 3 acetylene and 2 argon on hand. I highly prefer not having to deal with all the hassle of testing etc. that comes along with owning your own tanks. Plus, if something goes wrong with them (leaking valve etc.) it is not my problem and I have zero downtime. It might cost more in the long run, but it is a whole lot less PITA in my opinion and that makes it worth it to me.

i get mine exchanged at tsc aii the time they have never asked me any questions. i orded my tanks off ebay and they exchanged for them.

why doesn"t the same type of liability apply to small propane tanks sold at the quick stop marts? those tank are exchanged over and over and the product is very flammable?? just wondering

I have my own tanks bought them new , but the welding supply place exchanges them and I get somebody elses old beat up tanks and one time I had to take one back due to a leaky valve. So your never going to see "your" tanks back. Your tanks should be stamped SOLD on them and you should not have a problem turning them in for exchange.

Tim To put it plain and simple the courts in this country have made to easy for these guys to get sued if something goes wrong. Consequently insurance prices drive them to want to only fill the tanks they own. Your are not the bad guy just a victim of this countries liberal courts.

If the shoe is on the other foot, can you stand the law suit yourself if your tank blows and kills someone?

No experience with Gaspony. The reason your local company is that way about cylinders you own is liabilities and safety. Do you have the liablility insurance to cover yourself owning those cylinders like that? What if one of your cylinders blows up while they are filling it? So they have the right to refuse filling it. The cylinders you lease from them are under rules and regulations to be hydro tested every so often and valves checked or replaced and after so long or if tanks are old or fail hydro test they are scrapped. Maintainance and testing cost the gas cylinder companies too. Fire extinguisher, scuba, SCBA cylinders are all hydro tested every so often or replaced if too old or fail the test.

Oh I understand thier reasons but thats makes me the bad guy for owning my own tanks? The hydro test dates are stamped on the tanks and they have no other defects (gouges dents...etc) but because I have not signed a contract with them I'm dangerous?

I'm with Tim. Also they sure don't mind taking your money when you buy the tanks. If they don't like us who buy tanks, why do they sell them. As far as safety they can get off of it. One I delt with a long time stopped working on regulators and wanted a high minium just to send them off and it would take a few days. I said, I'm sure you have some parts still left, just sell them to me and I will fix it my self. Their reply was I can't because of safety, you might not fix it right. Now get off it I said, If if a part seller were liabal for my work you couldn't buy a part for anything enywhere. I also added if this faulty regulator kills me because you won't sell me part for it my wife will think you are at fault because you prevented me from fixing it and she might come after you. Rest of the story. I went home and got some old regulators that was like mine, took them apart and used parts and fixed mine. Regulators aren't rocket sceince. It has been working fine past 5 years and I now deal with another company.

In a court of law, lawyers have made it so that the parts suppliers are liable for your work. They sold you the parts that enabled you to do faulty work, therefore it's their fault that you performed faulty work. Simple logic, and all they need is one judge and jury to buy it.

About 50 years ago, i leased a set of tanks from the local supplier. cost $50 for 5 years! With exchange policy-bring in an empty, buy a full one! Saved a bunch of hassles, and i always have them on hand! One goes empty, i load it up in my pickup, take it in, pay the money, get a full one, go home! No worries of living on a residential street, nothing wrong with them being somebody elses tanks! Just paid for another five years! Hope i live long enogh to use them up!
