Blower engine won't fire

I aquired a none working Homelite backpack blower, UT08121.
The spark plug fires, so I put some starting fluid in the hole, put the plug back in, pulled the cord and got nothing. On other small engines, just firing the plug next to the hole would light off the fluid. I tried fluid thru the carb and still got nothing. There seems to be decent compression when pulling the cord. But a screw-in gage read less than 30 psi and a hand held gage read over 80psi after 2 or 3 pulls. I've read that you can't accuratly test compression on a small engine.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Make sure the flywheel key hasn't sheared. I've found that once or twice. Spark, compression, and gas but if it doesn't spark at the right time it won't run.

I have bout 1/2 dozen CJ8 left. I buy them by the dozen and change plugs yearly or as soon as they give any problem even if they look good.
I would go get 2 new plugs even before I pulled the cord.
Another spark plug could be used as a bit of a tool. Rip off the ground electrode and see if that one sparks a good blue spark. If not check the high voltage wire for rust where the plug clips in. Use pencil with sandpaper wrapped around if rusty there. I am assuming it has no points. If it has points I would automatically clean and gap them.

Hey frankiee, I also have new CJ8 plugs, but wanted to try the blower with a handy used one first, as it had none when I got it. Although the spark is yellow and not blue, I believe it should at least ignite the starter fluid when set at the plug hole and sparked. On other engines, I would get a nice blue flame coming out of the plug hole.
I will have to get into the mag and see what, if anything is wrong there. Some one has taped the plug wire, also.

Just because a plug will fire outside the cylinder does not mean it will fire under compression. I have had stopped up exhaust to prevent an engine from running.

Check the bolts that hold the cylinder down on the crankcase. Last year a guy gave me a nice Poulan blower that quit. I found that the 2 bolts holding the jug down were loose, so it was losing crankcase compression, thus no transfer to the cylinder. I tightened them up. it fired right up. Starts and runs well, now...

Sorry about my earlier answer. I did not thoroughly read your post. Had trouble with a weed eater a couple days ago and the on/off switch being grounded was the culprit. bob

Why can't you test compression on a small engine?

I had a weed whacker that behaved just like that. Took it apart and the cylinder walls were badly scored. That was before I had a compression tester.

I scored a free chainsaw awhile ago, 150# compression with my tester runs great. Bar was destroyed as was the gear that drives the chain, great motor though... I think the guy who had it never put in any bar oil.

Ludwig, The reason why compression tests are not often accurate in small engines (not counting little engines like chainsaws and weedeaters) is that there is usually an ACR (automatic compression release) in the engine. This is a centrifigal system on the camshaft which slightly opens the exhaust valve at low rpm. This makes it easier to spin over and thus to get to fire. Having it able to turn over faster allows you to use a smaller starter thus needing less electrical power or allows you to have less strain on the recoil which causes fewer broken ropes, better starting etc.

Small engines with an ACR are usually tested with a leak down tester which is a device which injects air into the cylinder while the engine is at TDC or BDC and measures the amount of air which escapes. Because the engine is not rotating, the ACR remains closed. The bonus to using a leak down test is that you can listen for the hiss of air leaking and tell what your problem is. It will leak out the carb if you have a leaking intake valve, leak out the muffler if you have a leaking exhaust valve, leak out the oil fill tube if you have bad rings or a scored cylinder etc.

Please don't use starting fluid in two stroke engines, iit doesent have the lubrication in it and will quickly ruin the engine.

I think it's already ruined....that's why it was abandoned at the flea market, along with a 10" Craftsman compound miter saw, vacuum cleaner, water cooler, a complete hotel style toilet with pressure tank flush, two repairable kids bikes, a pair of working walkie talkies, 5 new tubes of calking and a gun, new paint roller frame, and a set of brand new tire chains. The guy just went home and left it. It was late in the day and I was there at the right time. It took 45 minuts to load and tie the stuff on a big hand cart and haul it out to the parking lot. One of my biggest scores ever!

BTW, the miter saw was in/near a fire so the handle got slightly damaged. The motor runs fine, but the real problem is the blade drive gear has missing teeth and can only be purchased with a new motor at $130 plus S&H. That's why it was abandoned along with the blower.

He paid $20 to bring it in to the Flea Market. But it may have been closer than the dumps.

Sorry, the on/off switch can't be grounded if there's spark.

I had an engine similar to that which acted the same and it was cuz the muffler/exhaust got carboned n closed off. Once it was cleaned out she ran fine. Also, its much easier to arc curent across a plug gap at atmospheric pressure versus when its inside a cylinder under compression ya know..... ..i.e. just cuz a plug fires outside dont mean its firing when under compression inside the cylinder

The muffler and exhaust are free of carbon. Other times I've placed a plug next to a spark plug hole and it would ignite the starting fluid when sparked and a flame would jump out of the hole. But not this time.
