Refilling oxygen tanks

Hello,

I have a large oxygen and acetylen tank in the shop, but also have a small set I carry around. It is always a hassle to go get them exchanged. I was wondering about refilling from the large to the small. I belive I can physicall hook them together with a valve but not sure if this has ever been tried before...

I have worked in the EMS field all my adult life. Transfilling the smaller, portable oxygen cylinders ("D" sized) from larger cylinders ("K") sized is very common-almost every agency I've encountered does this. Problems are rare, but do occur. I know of one instance where a pressurized hose broke, impacting an electrical outlet and causing a flash fire.

Most gas retailers will discourage you from transfilling, but will still sell you the equipment to do it.

Acetylene can't be filled from one tank to another. Oxygen can BUT it becomes a liabilty problem for the supplier. We have a mini torch at work for hard to get to jobs and wanted to fill the small tank from the large one the same way the supplier does with a stainless steel line and adaptor. The little cylinders hold as much pressure as most large oxygen cylinders except the 4000 psi ones. The pressure would equalize. The problem comes in that you are not in a controlled environment to fill the small cylinders. We would have had to sign a waiver of liability in case any oil got on the filler or there was ever any problem. It kind of sucks having to get the small cylinders from the supplier but it's safer. My son steals oxygen all the time with a small tank to keep minnows,but don't fool with acetil?(sp) that stuff can be a bomb!

Also - don't EVER lay the acetelyne tank on its side to use it. The carbon and hydrogen can separate and you'll get pure hydrogen at the torch. Big boom. If you have laid it on its side, stand it up for an hour or so before using it to stabilize everything. As per a tank salesman who supposedly knew what he was talking about.

Actually I think it squirts out the acetone or something that is in there as a stabilizer and burns bad and reduces the stability of the tank. Stability as in big bang possible.
That is what I was told, if it has been on it's side let it sit upright for at least an hour to drain back down.

In any case do not opertate the acy tank on it's side.

Most oxygen cylinders are filled to 2250 psi.If you were going to hook them together the hose would have to be capable of withstanding this pressure. Acetelene is actually a liquid that vaporises and the cylinder is filled with a spongy material. I don't think you'll have much luck there. I think what your are trying to do is a little unsafe and according to DOT Regs. is also illegal.

Absolutely Acetylene becomes unstable at above 15 lbs or so and can explode. Acy tanks have special stuff in them to keep it stable.

if you have the proper stuff you can partially refill the smaller one with OXY, but I would not recommend trying it with the acetylene one unless you want to die.
