Can anyone recommend a cheap metal chop saw? I don't plan on using everyday but would be nice to have one instead of using my hacksaw all the time.
Thanks!
Craig

My first chop saw was a Mikita, I bought it for $25 at a farm auction, the guy I out bid was pi$$ed I out bid him and said real nasty "I hope the son of a bi$#H dosent work". It worked great, the fence and vice was hard to keep squair to the blade but it didn't bother me, most of my work didnt require perfect angles and if it did I just took a little more time to set it strait. My brother in law didnt like the saw and gave me a new Millwalkiee chop saw for my birthday. But my Mikita worked good and looked a lot like cheep off brand saws I seen for under $100 and it worked, maybe if I used my cheep tools everyday they would give up on me but in most cases I've had good luck with cheep brand stuff with my occational use, other than my portable bandsaw it died quick.

I've got the 49$ saw from HF as well.

I've cut alot of 1/4 and 3/16 plate bar stock, up to 3/4 round stock, some 1/2" x 1" bar stock, and 2" angle iron as well as square tubing. have cut the odd 1 and 1.25" hardened pins as well.

Go easy and it works fine. The russian blades they sell with it are a tad generic though...

Hi souNdguy;

You wrote "The russian blades they sell with it are a tad generic though..." That isn't entirely clear to me. Would you elaborate, please?

Uh... not sure how to simplify that statement any more than it already is....the russian blades that Harbor freight sells are cr@ppy...

( the 5 pack of blades sold that go for the 14" saw are russian origin.. not chineese )

Hi souNdguy;

Generic doesn't always equal crappy, so your response clarified that for me. That's what I asked for--clarification, not simplification.

I love America too, but Harbor Freight is the place to go. Most of their tools are very usable.

I needed one for a job, for cutting heavy gauge metal studs, no one had the tooless Milwaukee model in stock, so I found a rigid for $150, the Milwaukee was under $200, use good safety glasses and hearing protection around these. The rigid is not bad, best warranty for the money I could find, still want that Milwaukee though. They are handy to have.

I recomend a "Pawn Shop Special". Bought one myself bout 3 weeks ago. A beat up Metabo that works great for $37.50 plus tax.

Harbor Freight $49.95 14 inch not heavy duty but does a good job if you use it with tlc.
