For the Electrolysis experts:
1. Will the process harm the tin plate on the inside of a gas tank? I am derusting by suspending a piece of pipe in the filler and using the tank itself to hold the water.
2. Can one use steel cable for the anode or sacrificial electrode? lots of surface area, and i have several feet of 1-1/2"used steel cable.
3. has anyone attempted to replate the inside of a gas tank with copper or other metal?
thanks.

JG, how I cleaned the inside of several of my tanks was
1. set the tank on a rubber mat
2. filled tank with the electrolysis solution
3. used a steel rod as anode. put a piece of water hose on the bottom of rod and a piece rubber hose on the rod where it goes thur the fill hole on tank(this keeps rod from shorting out on tank)
4. hooked + to rod and - to outside of tank.

CAUTION!!! be sure to turn charger off before removing rod, or adjusting----hydrogen will build up inside tank and can cause an explosion if rod shorts out against tank and creates a spark!!!

Electrolysis is when Dc current is in contact with sath water it makes lye.If you have all of this in your gas tank you have real problems.go to the parts store and get gas tank rust treatment.

We don't use salt we use Washing Soda. not to mention the small amounts of chlorine gas that are also formed when using table salt as the electrolite

Keith-OR I'm glad another person is concerned about the hydrogen production. In an open container it just floats away as it's lighter than air. Inside a gastank though there is the potential to collect.

A 1 liter bottle filled with non pressureized Hydrogen will launch itself 100 feet when ignited.
Just ask my son.

I have used electrolysis to clean rust from inside gas tank in motorcycles and garden tractors. It worked good for me. For more info, here is link Link
