I am trying to decide on which backhoe to buy. I will use it for personal use not
for a buisness. I want to clear a few acres, put in septic sys, make drainage
ditches, foundations, etc. Anyone have an opinion and a reason or know of any
sites to get comparitive info like specs. I want well used, below $ 15k. 20+ years in the Army Ya Hoo. Thanks
Jim

I have been in construction 30 years and for my home/farm I own a JCB1550. It is big, big does not urn over as easaly as small. I had a Kabuta. rolled it twice at .5 MPH Also old worn big iron still has strength. Id look at JD710, Case 780. Many old government owned Fords. ect. Good luck, and remember length and width count.

I'm also in the market for a backhoe. Plan on using it for: -septic tank -root cellar, build project -water lines -dig out stumps -storm cellar, build project -drain culvert, for road

Problem is--I'm a poor boy.
So I've been trying to find another alternative than $15,000 for a backhoe.

Has anyone used the build yourself plans from www.cadplans.com

Also:
www.gate.net/~lsikes/cad.html
This is a site that shows a digger being built.

I would appreciate any comments. What do you think?

The most common backhoes in regular use these days appear to be Case, John Deere or Cat. You should be able to find a respectable unit for the price range you mentioned.

Paul:
It sounds like you have some experience with backhoes. Thanks for your reply.  I have a 1990 JCB 1400B.  It overheated constantly, from the very beginning.  The mechanic, from the company that I bought it from, told me that there was a design flaw with the radiator.  He was always being called out to blow out radiators.  I started washing out the radiator every chance I had and found out later from another owner that the design flaw was that the fins were spaced too closely together and normal backhoe activity, such as just loading a dump truck with dirt would clog them.  I need a rebuild at 4,000 hours due to a cracked block due to overheating.  I am now trying to get JCB to finance the repair - not pay for it but just finance it.  I would bet that the problem was known to them and then corrected in later models.  What years are you hoes?

I never had any problem of this kind with my John Deere.
