See HF has a ad for a kilowatt hour meter and other fuctions for 29.99. Looks like it might be fun to play with. Like what does one refrig use cmpared to the other etc. And what does my water bed cost to heat.

Any body got one???

When you compare and "old" refridgerator toa "new" refridgertaor, you have to make sure that you factor in the volume of the refridgerator. For the same externianl dimensions, the internal dimensions are usually larger because of the thinner insulation. To mormalize the results, you have to divide by the the interior volume and compare the energy usage on a kilowatt-hour per unit volume basis.
I don't know whether the new ones are more efficient or not, but if you don't compare on that basis, you don't have a fair comparison.

I'm comparing cubic feet of storage space - that's all that counts as far as I'm concerned. And, if you go to efficiency-rating websites and databases, like Energy Star, they rate the same wasy - by storage capacity.

There are several places selling them now for $19.95. I used them all over our house and barn before we converted to solar-electric. We wanted to find out exactly what each appliance was using. Found out some surprising things - also some disappointing things. I found that hardly any of our new "engergy efficient" appliances use substantially less than the olds ones we replaced. Our refrigerator was working perfectly - we'd bought it new in 1975. Well, after reading all the hype about how all refrigerators are inefficient if over 10 years old, we upgraded. And, we bought one of the most energy efficient units available according to the Engergy Star rating. After checking it for six months, it bascially uses the same amount of electricity as the old one. Had the same experience with a few other things we'd replaced.

I've got one. Used it a bit, now it sits on the shelf. Watch out for your startup loads exceeding the meter upper limit.

If you use it, and a spreadsheet, and your electric bill, you can do a lot of figuring.

I have a couple of meters. One I purchased when an electric business was selling out. The other I put together from an old utility meter (not the plug-in type.) I have used them to determine elec usage of fridges and freezers. There was some conplaint one time about what an old freezer our church had was costing us to operate. Turned out it was not bad at all.

Some libraries will lend out one free for a week. I found that replacing my 40 year old frig. wouldn't save me a penny in electricity. My coffee pot is a different story.
