Sigh. Got some good answers here on this question, didn't write them down, things came up, & not can't find my old thread....

What are some good brands of paint sprayers, need to put a bunch of white paint (suppose mostly latex) on buildings around here. Seems the type that dips in a 1 or 5 gallon bucket & piston pumps up the tube is the way to go?

Thanks for the past replies, just looking for the names & links that were mentioned last time.....

I don't know what area you are from, but I am a retired paint contractor and I am getting ready to start selling my equipment. I have several airless paint spray equipment, including electric and gas powered rigs. These are commercial units and are piston pumps. Also I have several ladders with automatic leg levelers, and a lot of miscelaneous hand tools. I am in the Kansas City area. 816-320-3282.

I just bought a Wagner 1970 airless Reconditioned sprayer for $225 off CraigsList. The guy had it for some time and never used it once. Works great, but is a pain/slow to clean. Piston pump, 3/4 HP, .015 tip, 50' of hose and metal gun. The motor only runs when the gun trigger is pulled.

I was at Home Depot looking at the Graco units while waiting for paint to be mixed. Instead of a fixed, flat strainer on the suction tube, they have a garden hose fitting and the strainer screws into that. When done painting, you remove the unused paint from the sprayer, hose and gun. Then remove the strainer and replace it with your garden hose. Turn on the water and sprayer and (I assume) the unit will be flushed in no time. So I'm converting my Wagner to use the same method but the suction tube will be removed and the water hose will connect to the pump inlet. The biggest problem was finding a short length of 3/4" hose with a female end. Most hose is 5/8".

We bought a 3/4 hp Campbell-Hausfeld airless setup from Grainger (about $400) to do our barns and it works extremely well.

I hate painting and needed a way to get it done fast. We rented a JLG manlift from a contractor buddy and we did the main barn (36x72 with a 24x48 wing) in a weekend, including the trim, but not the sash. The main barn is 35 feet at the peak, which would have been a nightmare to do off ladders.

I sprayed while my helper back-brushed. The airless has great control for edging and leaves very little overspray.

I did our machinery shed (24x60) the same way, only working alone. Had the whole thing done (less the window sash) in a day, trim and all.

Good luck,
Scott

you,ll be very happy if you get an airless sprayer from your trusted hardware dealer. once you have it, it will handle oil or latex and make barn painting and equip. painting a lot less work. clean-up is a malor pain on a good size airless, but do a good job or it won,t work worth beans next time.

Paul I answered that post and as many times you have helped me I"ll post it again. I have a piston pump sprayer that carries a 5 gal bucket with 50 ft of hose , contractor type. Pretty powerful and beats air hands down. Sometimes it even doubles as a fluid pump for tractor tires and such. Well worth the money. Richard

Yup - thanks. Couple fellas had a brand, & mentioned a nozzle brand as well.

I did use the little hand Wagner a couple years ago, one arm got pretty strong.... ;) The $200 units they have look ok, I think a contractor type might be a little better.

Also curious about puting the oil/aluminumn paint on roofs, but I'm not expecting one unit to do everything. Seems the traveling fellows have a piston pump for latex paint, & a pressure vat for the roof paint.

Paul I have run all kinds of paint through this and it , to me anyways is to clean it good when done. They are definitely more serious than a wagner and why not, They work. I will look tomorrow at what brand mine is.

I painted a rather large barh with a Wagner - the kind with a one quart bottle. NOT RECOMMENDED!. On the bright side, by the time I had used a quart of paint it was time to move ladder anyway!

I'm not a painter. Much rather dig in the dirt or chop wood, but had some work done a few weeks ago by a local contractor. He used a Wagner rig that did a fine job really quick.
