OT VOIP INFORMATION NEEDED

need some help please, to clear up some confusion on my part. i want to install voip.i have read several articles on this subject, none seems to be clear to me as to what i need in the way of equipment. i am switching my computer to a cable/internet server. they offer several speeds. what do i need to set up the voip. thanks for any help. have a good day.

I've used Time Warner's VOIP service for over a year now and see no differnce to regular land line (other than cost). Now, moving to the country, I'm considering no home phone since everyone has a cell these days.

ok if you just want to talk to your buddy in australia and you have a high speed internet you can just get skype that will allow you to use your pc as a phone type set up.
if you want to call people you do with a phone you need a service vonage,att ,quest,your cable company all run them.I have vonage as it is the least expensive.I have a battery backup for the cable modem and the vonage box for the occasional power outs.never lost the cable.
works great have 911 and it too works (don't ask).
any questions ask away .vonage has a free month or two if you sighn up thru some one who has them.you can even call europe in alot of places for free.

And Internet is not battery backed like wireline phone service.
I know several who have Vonage, mixed reviews, but all of them have one way transmission problems and "chopping" , etc at times.

I work for a phone company that is doing local VOIP service. Works well as we control the IP network and pull the call off as soon as possible and send it a out to the telephone network.

We are using cable modems with a built-in MTA (phone connection. Plug the house phone into to the cable modem and make a call. I've seen VIOP phones at Home Depot. You can also use the computer with a headset and mic.

What are the internet speeds of the cable modem service? If the speed is too slow, your call will break up like a bad cell phone connection. If you plan on downloading during a call, you may want the fastest speed available.

Other things to remember is your phone number going to be local for your nieghbors/work to call you and will 911 service work correctly showing your address and phone number during a emergency call.

A friend of mine lives in maryland ( ha ) and I'm in FL. We play board games about 1 weekend a month and use messenger to setup a video/voice feed. We set a camera onthe computer monitor and set it on the table.. monitor has a built in microphone, and his voice is routed thru pc speakers. He has a camera on his end as well as a mic and speakers. We had cable modem on our end, and he has dsl 1.5meg on his end. Video is smooth for the most part and audio is perfect.

You need some sort of box that hooks into the internet on one plug and that your normal phone plugs into on another plug. Vonage sells them, they have a startup plan where they basically pay you to try it for 3 months.

We tried it, but our wireless isp wasn't stable enough to use it.

As somebody mentioned above, if your internet goes out, you can't call out, nobody can call in, no 911, etc..... some friends of mine have it and love it, others have it and hate it.
