I have a 92 F350 460cu that I am replacing the harmonic balancer on. Today when I took it off (with a lot of cussing and fussing)some iggit had crossed threaded the bolt. I did not have much time to inspect the internal threads in the crank but suspect they are damage because the bolt looks like poo-poo.

If I am unable to chase the threads with a tap, what type off repair do ya'll reccomend?
Anybody ever tried heli-coil or jergens inserts for this type of job?

The engine is still in the truck so room is limited.

What do ya'll think I can do short of pulling the engine and removing the crank?

My 2 cents. Chase the threads with your tap. Install the balancer. Lightly guppy the bolt threads with JB weld or Loc tite bearing set and snug up. Bolt will set up as the product cures. If you need to disassemble 10 years from now, it should come apart. The bolt is just there keep the balancer from falling off the keyed shaft, does not need to be double grunt tight.

I think a heli-coil would work in that application. Probably need to pull the radiator and stuff to get a little room in there. A right angle drill would help.

I don't know. Will that throw the balance off?

Should be too near the center of mass to make much, if any, difference.
