Does anyone have ideas on how it get posion oak oil out of a sleeping bag. I have tried dry cleaning it. My son used the bag again and got posion oak again! Any ideas would be welcome.

I've lived in an area with posion oak for over 40 years. The only way to elimate the oil is to thoughly wash it in soap and water. You really only have two options try washing it or replace it with a washable sleeping bag. After all it could happen again.

Cindy, try "green" Dawn dishsoap as it'll break up almost any oil. Don't let the washer drain without skimming the oil off the top of the water with a pan. You have to skim the oil off on on every cycle or it'll just respread when the water drains.

Cindy regretably you are going to spend nearly what a new bag will cost, without any assurance all the oils are eliminated. The bag may be destroyed in the process too. You might contact the local outfitters store for ideas on cleaning the oils out of the bag. Try the county extension agent, sometimes they are quite usefull and often forgotten. That's my ideas for your problem.

Alcohol is very effective in removing urushiol on clothes and shoes if used right away. In your case, washing in hot water and detergent are the only resort but may destroy the sleeping bag.

Cindy, is there a reason that you can`t wash the bag with ordinary laundry detergent and water? I don`t have any poison oak around me, but tons of poison ivy. Even though my clothing makes regular contact with the ivy, I rarely get the rash because of meticulous handling and laundering of my clothing. I believe that the oil readily breaks down with detergent. Good Luck, Russ

A fire chief working part time for a long ago former employer suggested real lye soap to treat the posion ivy another employee had a cronic case of. It worked quite well, dried it and cut the oil I guess. Hope it helps.
