I used a carbon stick that fits in a oblonged hole to weld it round again. But could not get stick out and it broke. I let it cool down comlpetely. Anybody else used these and had any luck?
I probably did something wrong.
And is there a web site to get these?

Look for a local E.D.M. supply distributer.

Graphite is also used in E.D.M. machining. They will be able to get you any size you want.

third party image

Forney used to have these. If you have a hardware store where you"re at that has Forney stuff they should be able to get them for you.

Jack,

I just got an assortment of carbon rods from
a carbon rod manufacturer in Pa , they are broken
pieces from the manufacturing process. I had some small rods , so I got some from 1 inch to 2 1/2.

Use a geen branch or a piece of old broom handle.

You did nothing wrong. As you already know the carbon is serving as a guide/welding dam for the molten metal that it won't "stick to". In reality though the carbon is porous and will burn. Due to the porosity and the fact that often the molten metal will burn slightly into the carbon a tiny bit, it will often stick to the point that you have to sacrifice the carbon, especially on a hole that's either fairely long or small in diameter or both. I've used larger pieces and machined threads into them in order to screw into a hole allowing me to build up around the top of a part where a mating part had worn it down. Even in a scenario like this the piece was good for only a few holes before I had to make another one. So, no you did nothing wrong with the carbon. If you ever find yourself needing to build up a corner or something like that you can also use copper since the weld won't "stick" to it either. I've used thick copper bars in the past to lay on ungodly amounts of weld while building up drive tumblers for cranes, etc. and it works like a charm. I've never tried copper tubes/rods for holes but in some cases that might work just as well as the carbon,if you can get to both ends to be able to drive the piece out of the resulting hole.

This trick was taught to me, by my dad, back in the late 60's when I was wanting to learn to weld.

Other post is right.

We used to tear apart old 6 volt fence charger batteries to get the carbons. Not sure where else they are found. I have a handfull, sounds like I had better protect them.

I got mine at my local welding supply. They were for a Electrolisys experiment my son is working on. They are covered on a copper foil that you will have to remove. I think 3/8" was the largest they had. about 30 cents each.
