OT COMPUTER QUESTION

When I send a friend an e-mail or repley to one from him--everything works ok.
BUT if I send him an article or an attachment or something a little larger than just a letter note he doesn't rec. it.
He has his e-mail set to rec. anything from me.
What do you folks thinkk the problem could be.
Thanks for your help.

Agree. You might ask your bud to consider setting up an email acct at GMail (Google), Yahoo or Hotmail. They're free, safe and usually will allow attachments. Good tip is to ZIP the attachment before sending it. Most email programs will block an attached .EXE (since they are 'executable' programs).

Agree 100 percent with rhousten. all so, some E-mail programs have a place in their setup where you can limit the size of mail it will receive.

Is he on a corporate network ? your file attachment is triggering a spam filter or you are sending infected files. Spam filters are not always set to send a NDR (Non-Delivery Report)to the sender of the mail as this is one of the tricks the spammers use to get their spam through. I.E. I use your email address to send mister x some spam from my server Mister X's mail server may reject the Spam which then gets sent back to you as you are listed as the sender. My job as the spammer is done becasue even if Mister X's server rejects the spam it gets sent to you instead.

Try changing the file extension to to .Zip or maybe .TXT it may get through that way.

Email used to be a very useful tool which delivered emails with a great degree of reliability. Spammers have made it less than a sure thing now because sending a NDR may be exactly what the spammer is counting on. I spend a great deal of time tracing messages that never got delivered and nobody was notified that it didn't reach the intended recipient. Spammers have made email a PITA.

When you double click on a file windows uses the file extension to determine which program to open the file with. .xls is MS Excel .doc is MS Word .TXT is a text file, there are hundreds of file types. If you open My Computer select "View" then "Folder options" you will get a window. The second tab of the windows says "view" under there is a checkbox that says "Hide extensions for known file types" if you uncheck it and select apply the file extensions of your files should be visible. .zip is the file extension for WinZip files (The program WinZip is free to download it's purpose is to compress files to save space and bandwidth when emailing or downloading-VERY POPULAR)

You can rename a file to any extension you want but it may nolonger open without the proper extension on it. (Windows will try to use the wrong program) Anyway because Zip files are so popular most email programs will accept them. The person you send the file too will have to rename the file with the original extension which you can tell them in the email.

Otherwise just download WinZip and use it to create the zip file. Your buddy on the other end will need WinZip to extract the file. This is a very normal way to exchange files via email.

One small quibble: WinZip can be downloaded for free, but you really should pay for it. It's shareware (which means you download it on the honor system and either pay for it or delete it after the evaluation period is up).

A program called 7-zip really is completely free though (Google for it).
