Muffler shop welding

I have not actually seen the machine nor the process used by muffler shops to weld the pipes in place on cars. I have a gas shielded MIG and sometimes get really beautiful welds, but have not done exhaust system welding. How do they weld over the top in such tight places right up against the floor pan and get no-leak welds? Is it something more or different from an ordinary MIG?

I would like to point out that a MIG welder is always gas sheilded. If it is not gas shielded (flux core) it is just a wire welder.

Hi Joe,

Your observation raises an interesting point. MIG does describe a gas shielded welding process but is itself frequently incorrect when the shielding gas is not inert. The officially sanctioned name of the process is GMAW, and FCAW for flux cored. Neither of these make words that can be readily pronounced or understood like MIG.

So if MIG is being used incorrectly already, it's only a small stretch to accept its use to describe any manual wire feed process. That's all that people with a casual acquaintance with welding mean when they say it anyway. Those who know what they're talking about should probably go whole hog and say GMAW or FCAW. The problem is to decide whether you want to be right or you want the most people to understand you. This is one of those cases where you can't have it both ways.

Anybody who was bored by that didn't have to read it.

What can't be pronounced about them? GMAW- Gas Metal Arc Weld
FCAW- Flux Core Arc Weld

I just call it all wire welding.
So do most I talk to, and I work in a machine shop. There's wire, stick, and tig. (might as well say oxy/acetalene too)

They use a standard MIG welder and I've seen a few of them weld without using a welding helmet! A good shop will lower it or tack it and remove it but most of the time they are in a hurry or you are. It's very common for them to put some muffler cement around the joint to seal their bad welds. With a good fit and good welder anyone could do nice welds on new muffler tubing. On old rusty tubing it's a different story. Dave

Gas shielded migs. You may ask at some muffler shops what wire or gas mix they prefer to use?

The shop in my area uses just a plain jane mig welder but they also use a mirror in tight places to see whats going on. Guess its something that if you do it day in day out you get good at doing.

Sorry, this is off your topic, but in a previous post I noticed you said that you had an old Idealarc welder with built in power factor capacitors. Would you know what microfarads the capacitors are? I was thinking of putting some on my Idealarc and wanted to get an idea what size I would be dealing with. If it is a lot of trouble don't worry about it. I am just wondering if you might know from looking at them previously. Mine is single phase on 240 volts. Thanks

Time consuming disassembly to access the capacitors. I did that only once to access the cooling fan. Replaced the bushings in that fan.

I think you'll find that most good shops fit the pieces in place and tac weld them. Then the piece is taken back off and finish welded on the bench.
I've seen a lot of other installations where everything was welded up while in place on the vehicle, but the top left un-welded. I've also seen a few vehicles get various new computer components, compliments of the garage that doesn't take the trouble to isolate them and starts burning away on the vehicle.

Friend of mine owns a shop, Muffler King in Redmond WA. That is what they use gas shielded MIG's, Mostly Miller 135's. The guys are just good from repetition. On a REAL tight weld they drop the exhaust loose from the hangers but most times they just weld up and around. A couple of his guys are real artists with a MIG! Years of welding the same thing over and over gets you tuned in.
