Figured I would post this over here and give it a chance to live on the front page for a spell!!

I'm fixin to load the tires on a tractor with water. I live in SC where the coldest we typically see are the low 20's. Anything much lower is record breakin stuff. You fella's down here use any anti-freeze in yours or just let it ride? I was thinking about a couple gallons in each tire (100 gallons at max fill) but don't know if that really does any good or is even neccesary. Thanks for the help.

We use methanol in this area. It mixes with water just like antifreeze. Been running with methanol since 84. I posted this on another site and some went nuts thinking the tires would explode and no they won't. LOL It's mixed with water.

1:10 with windshield washer fluid to tap water will be lots in your application. Don't somebody else who doesn't have to clean up and pay to repair calcium Chrlorde damage. RTell you it's the one an only material to use. Too much tradition and not enough thinking.

You can mix it weak and usually you will still not get a solid freeze.. just a slushy that melts fast once you start working..

Peabo, Where do you live in SC? I live in Abbeville Co. and have had tires freeze soild on very rare occasions. One option is to find an automotive/truck or ag shop that needs to get rid of waste coolant. It"s a hazardous waste, so it"s not supposed to be dumped. Make shure it doesn"t have ANY oil in it. Filter it well, check the freeze point to make shure it"s OK and install.

Are you looking for the weight or just freeze protection ? If for the wghtthen calcium chloride wood be the way to go as it increases the weight per gallon of material also won't freeze If just for the freeze protection then just use the chart on the bottle to figure it out .Seems like anti freeze would be awful expensive for this when a couple of bags of chloride will mix with water . The chloride can be adjusted for strength which will also change the weight per gallon and freeze point. Hope this helps. WE use the chloride for the weight and freeze in MI we get -20 some.

Hey Partner, Thanks for the reply!

The weight with just plain water will be plenty heavy for my needs. All I"m lookin for is freeze protection. Without starting an argument over calcium with anyone I will just politely say that i don"t think it would be a good suit for my particular needs.

I have seen antifreeze charts for protection to 10F. Just seems to me the water in a tire would retain more heat than a radiator, therefore the charts would be a bit overkill. Don"t know, maybe I just need to bite the bullet. Thanks for the help!!

Hi, Peabo, I live in SC and use antifreeze in tires.It dosen't have to get very cold to nake enough ice to ruin a tube. Antifreeze is cheap, tubes and labor to change them are expensive.

Peabo. Sorry, did not see your reply last night to respond to.

The ones I have now with antifreeze were put in by previous owners. A gallon per medium sized tire, like on a 50 hp tractor, is considered enough here. Larger tractors would need more. A tire store should be able to narrow it down more.

Thanks for the reply KEH, The tires are fairly large (18.4-34). I think I will add 3 gallons per tire and go from their. Should be able to find it on sale this time of year I hope. Thanks for the help.
