Well, finally got my corn boiler put in today, I should have had it put in 6 months ago, but when you sell them & install them, everybody else comes first.
Now the house and shop are heated, and all our hot water needs are done by the outdoor corn boiler. With 8 people in the house thats ALOT of hot water.
Now before everybody starts ranting and raving about the price of corn, keep this in mind:
One bushel of corn is equal to 4.3 gallon of L.P. or 2.8 gallon of oil, you do the math. Shoot even if it was dead even to cost of L.P. I would still put it in, just to tell the overseas oil producing &%*@!#^%&# to stick their product!!! I'll sleep good tonight knowing I'm keeping warm with a home grown, readily renewable fuel source.

Hey, Maybe we need to bring back steam engines. Put a steam engine in the combine. Have it burn corn. So long as it can harvest significantly more corn than it uses, use the harvested corn for running the combine and heating houses.

All kidding aside, it makes the most sense to be as effecient with consumption as possible. Extra insulation and sealing usually easily pays for itself and reduces operating cost in the long run, and who doesn"t like that? Using the sun where practical is a good energy saver too.

at 4.00 per bushel gas has to be cheaper than corn if your burning a bushel or 2 per day

Thats an outdoor furnace? Around here its getting hard to get a permit to put one of those in (well, woodburners anyway). The problem is so many got put into places they shouldn't have been and got used badly. People with small lots put them in and then kept them choked way down so they smoked bad.
My uncle has one and uses it right but his is sized perfectly for his house so it burns hot most of the time and doesn't smoke.

We've got a small house (900 sq/ft) so I put a nice Jotul woodstove in the basement. Once the basement warms up the stove will heat the whole house. If we add a second story onto the house I'll put another stove on the first level but for now this works great. Got it on eBay for $300...

Well, I'm a solar kind of guy but I applaud what you're doing. Anything we can do to become more energy independent, to explore new options is time well spent.

If you have a minute google solar air heaters and see if that might not also be something you'd be interested in. Basically, its a 4x8x4" box out on your south wall that you blow cold air from the floor in (with a bathroom fan) and get warm air out the top.

Are you forgeting it takes oil to grow the corn?

I have heated a good sized shop near the Canadian border with stoker coal for about 25 years. Darned cheap heat! To me it makes a lot more sense than burning FOOD. Of course I realize we are lucky to have a source of the coal nearby.

Let's hope progress is made with turning "biomass" into automotive fuel. I have a feeling as the demand for food increases it will look less and less sensible to burn food or ferment good food into alcohol!

If corn goes sky high you can always mix some stoker coal with the grain.

Hey I live in middle TN but I have a corn stove in my living room doing the grunt work on heating this old VERY drafty non insulated house. On those below freezing nights its a workout but its still better than wood and cheaper than anything else. So what Im trying to say is I LOVE IT. ok gotta go
