6.5 diesel running hot

I have a 1995 Chevy pickup that is running hot. I just put a new engine in it and the first time out it was running about 240-250 degrees. I thought it had a bad thermostat, so I replaced it, but still the same problem. Funny thing, when the temp gauge says 250 degrees, the coolant in the reservoir where you add the coolant, is still cold. I did put on a new temp sender when I installed the engine. This is my first experience with the 6.5 diesel, so other than a faulty temp gauge, I don"t know what could be wrong. I would appreciate any advice you fellows can provide.

I had that trouble on my 1993 6.5L after I replaced a failed sending unit with a new one from a parts house. So I tried one from another parts house. Same problem. Then I bought an AC-Delco part from a GM dealer and the problem was cured.

Hmm, I will give that a try. I purged all the air out of the system, checked the ground connections and still the temp gauge showed 250-260. So I screwed in a mechanical temp gauge and it showed just under 200 degrees like it should.

I don't know what you are calling a "new" engine. I also don't know if your engine is actually running hot - or you've got a gauge/sensor problem.

If you find that it IS hot, check the upper radiator hose when running by squeezing it. If it's hard - i.e. gettting pressurized - you may have a head-gasket and/or cracked head problem. The 6.5s crack stock heads pretty easy. The new heads being made now (in China) are a huge improvement over the stock heads - much thicker castings, hardened valve seat inserts, etc.

The temp sensor for the gauge is near the front of the LH cylinder head sticking out towards the LH fender.

Is that the one you replaced?

Are you SURE you got the correct part? A friend just went through something similar with a 1994 and wound up returning the "parts store" heat sender and ordering one from the GM dealer by "vin" number.

The other thing to check that will cause ALL SORTS of strange problems is that you have ALL the ground wires connected to the engine.

IIRC there may be some ground leads at the back of one or both cylinder heads and on several intake manifold bolts/studs. These ground leads may extend from the wiring harness or be braided ground leads from the metal of the cab.

Yes that is the one that I replaced. I think it is the correct one. It looks identical to the old one.

I will check the ground straps. Come to think of it, I remember seeing a small braided cable hanging on the right side.

Thanks for the tips!

P.S.

Make sure ALL air has been purged from the engine.

Does your's have the air vent screw in the thermostat housing?

Yes it does. Does that screw have to be opened while the engine is running to purge the air? I never gave that a thought.
