I have a 1989 Ford Ranger 2.9l V6 and once it runs for a couple of minutes and I shut it off it wont start back up, I was wondering if something in the electrical system is getting hot. It will crank but wont start. Once you let it sit for 2 minutes it will start right up.

The TFI requires a small 7/32 thin socket or special wrench that can be found in all the parts stores. But first check and see if your oil level seems high because you have a bad fuel pressure regulator that is pulling gas in to the crankcase.

Hey Shawn PA, It could be the TFI module on the side of the Distrubutor, I found out from Ford"s that it has an almost 100% failure rate! It is temperature related- when it cools down it works again. Fairly easy to replace but be sure to follow directions! Be sure to use the silicon grease on the back of unit as it transfers heat to the dist. housing.

Does it lose spark when it quits?

The TFI is the electronics for the ignition. It requires a special screwdriver tip to remove it.

I had the magnetic pickup in a distributor on a '84 3.8 V6 fail,(same ignition we are talking about here) thats fun. You have to completely remove and disassemble the distributor. drive out a roll pin and press off the gear. Reassembling is more fun since you have to get the roll pin hole to line up perfectly as you press it on.
